Help me come up with a meaningful/clever gift for my little brother (33) who is graduating from medical school in June. I'm at a complete loss over what to give him. (I had planned on a really good stethoscope, but just found out that he got one through school.) He will be doing an ER internship. Thanks for your ideas!

Has he had a vacation recently? Maybe between school and start of Residency, give him a weekend at a beach house or skiing or someplace he'd like to go. This could be a "family" gift if you can't foot the bill yourself.

This might not be personal enough for a brother, but how about gift certificates to restaurants near the hospital where he'll be spending SO MUCH of his time for the forseeable future.

How about a nice big fat check to help him start paying off those med school loans?

What about a cleaning service? One of our residents was saying she only gets one day off week. She's almost too fried to do anything after an 80 hour workweek, much less clean.

How about a really nice pen for writing those prescriptions and other paperwork?
You can get it customized with initials or name, etc.
A doctor friend of mine ranked that as his favorite gift. He treasured it and used it daily (and this guy used cheap pens in school since he was always losing them but never that one...).

hey,
my thoughts on the previous posts:
the steth would be good....to bad he already ahs one...I LOVE MY STEHESCOPE!
The vacation i think is a great idea!!!!
if he's married/in a relationship get it for jsut the two of them, depending on fiancees im guessing it could be a family gift...or if he's single ....try to get your family immediate or extended away with him....
gift certifactes should be your last resort in my opinion....although a great idea i think...restuarants in the area....i think ill use it myself for ppl i want to give a gift to...but arn't clsoe close too...! very great idea...PRAISES!!!!
the check iddea i personally don't like
I HATE GETTING PENS FOR GIFTS!!!!. i think its just a pet peeve of mine...no offense...priobably cus i always lose them....i always have to bring multiple pens with me for clinicals...i lose them...and or can find when i need them immediatley otherwise...
I think you should go out and get a whole bunch of picture frames....like 10 or 20....nice ones....not girly...not glittery...he's a guy....some nice black, or metal...or something....simple and nice, not ugly...
then get black and white pictures of yourself...and relatives and freinds ...and old friends.....and perhaps even get ppl to write little messages on the back of the frames or something....
so then you give hima presonalized gift that took time...
i'd think it was a great gift
*open the box!* "Wow, you got me a picture of yourself....oh and a picture of the dog...oph and a picture of (so & so)...
its a quirky gift....he'll remember
PS. no offense to any posters whom i negged on their ideas....COUGH PENS COUGH! sorry lol
PPS... my grad gift from a group of my family was...surgical scissors...something other thing i don't know what it is yet...penlight...CPR mask....and an ipod mini...I WAS THRILLED!.
OH!!!
and someone gave me SEA MONKEYS!!!
I loved those...never had them b4!!!
(your family could give him sea monkeys....then inside the sea monkey box...put in the plane tix or soemthing)
sorry 4 hogging the whole forum.

make a stamp out of him with MD on the bottom
photo stamps
couple that with something he needs like a fabulous new mattress to crash on when he gets home from a horrid day.
I'm bumping this up for more ideas. So far, the vacation $ idea sounds pretty good. He lives with his girlfriend of 3 years, who is also graduating from med school and I could give it as a grad gift to the both of them.

After the stress of completing the program a spa weekend or cruise would be fabulous
