I agree with the others. I am currently reviewing applications for a posted position and I can't help but wonder whether I should invest my time in those applicants who live more than an hour away. If someone is not "local," it's one of the first issues I address with them. "Are you prepared to deal with the fact that this job is not near where you live? Are you prepared to move? Are you prepared to deal with a commute that most people could not live with?" I don't want to waste our orientation resources on someone who is not going to stay.
My recommendation to anyone applying for a job that is more than a 45 minutes away from their house is to address the issue up front, in their cover letter. Either say that you are prepared to move closer to the employer -- or say that you are prepared to deal with the long commute. If you don't, your application may be rejected in the first round of consideration -- without even being offered an interview.
