MDC RN part-time program

I'm taking my last 2 classes before I can apply to the MDC RN part-time program. Does anyone know if getting into the part-time program is harder than the full time??? And if anyone out there is or has been enrolled PT, what is the schedule like? I work full time and will be paying the expenses out of pocket. I work 9-5pm nearby the medical campus.

Im sorry that you are feeling down now. One thing you should know about MDC....NEVER LISTEN TO YOUR COUNSELORS!!!!!.... I have been led in the wrong direction so many times, its not even funny. Personally I have never heard that you don't have to take those classes if you have an AA. I don't think that is accurate. I have reviewed your transcript. The thing you need to concentrate on right now is making A's and nothing but A's for the rest of your classes. I don't want to make you any more down hearted than I may have already but, at the same time I am not going to lie to you. You have got to get your GPA WAY up.

They wouldn't even look at a 2.94. Honestly, I was not even sure I was going to make the program and I have a 4.0 and I am in Phi Theta Kappa. The competition is outrageous. From this point on you can't afford even a B.

Hi everyone! This is my first post as a "potential Nursing student"...I am changing careers after being a high school social studies teacher for the past 8 years...hopefully this is my last full school year teaching...got some questions for all you knowledgeable persons :wink2:

#1) I am registered for the AP1 and AP1Lab, and DEP 2000 (prereqs) at MDC...I already have a bachelors degree from FIU in international relations, and thought that the DEP 2000 would be "forgiven" because of classes I had taken in my undergrad...does anyone know?

#2) If I apply for the Part time (or accelerated) nursing program for next fall, will I be applying for the BSN or the AS in Nursing?

any help would be gladly appreciated!

Hi Teech2Nurse,

I also have a bachelors degree from FIU. If you want to apply for the accelerated program, you do not need to take DEP2000. It is not a requirement for that option. If you apply for the generic (full or part-time) program DEP2000 is not one of the classes that are 'forgiven', because it is a requirement of the generic option (just like A&P, CHM, Micro).

The part-time and accelerated options are both AS degrees. The BSN degree that MDC has is for those who already hold an AS degree in nursing and have their RN license.

ymarti, thanks for the info! Are you in the accelerated program or the P/T generic? I am wondering whether the accelerated would be too much to take on with a full time job...

any suggestions?

I got accepted for the full-time generic starting this fall. From what I hear, the accelerated program is incredibly intense. I don't think a full-time job would be feasible while in the program.

For Accelerated, I would not work as first semester is 21 credits. Like all nursing programs, MDC tells you not to work while pursuing a nursing degree given the time commitment and studying nursing requires. With that said, Living in the real world we all have bills to pay and I myself work while attending part-time and while the worload is just as heavy for part-time students its doable assuming you have good time management skills. But for the accelrated, I do not see how you could work 40 hrs a week and carry 21 credits while being there daily for school on top of studying. That's just my opinion unless maybe you work as a home health aid on perdiem basis and cram all your work hours during the weekend and given fact most home health/companion jobs are suited to students as you could probably study while on job if you are there as a sitter. This is just my opinion but we all do what we have to do to make ends meet

wow! So much to think about! So I guess the PT generic is the plan for me...I graduated with my Bachelors in 2001...Are you only allowed to take the classes they suggest, or can you register for more (if you can handle it)...

you have to follow prescribed schedule once admitted since you will not have completed the requisite classes needed to sit for the class (i.e you can't take med surg and advanced med surg together or fundamentals 1 or 2 together and pharmacology math or pharmacology together)

I love this site! I have seen and called so many advisors. I feel like Im getting the best information from here. Thanks everyone for investing your time and helping out others.

With that said, I think Im going to focus on retaking CLP and getting A's in A&P.

Any advice on Micro? Im terrified! Should I leave that for last?
