MDC Accelerated RN program, Spring 2010

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Is anyone else applying for the Miami Dade College Accelerated program starting Spring 2010? I've been reading posts on this sight for a while and thought it was only a matter of time until someone started a thread for those of us hoping to be accepted for January 2010, but I guess not so here it is. Good luck to everyone! Now, we wait....:)

So, whose excited about orientation?!?!?!?!?!

Ooh ooh, I am!! Lol. Hey, did you get all your documents in yet?

Woohoo, thats the spirit Shen! haha No, I haven't gotten them in yet. At this point I'm just waiting for the drug screening to get back from the lab. How about you?

Shen, or anybody else, did you notice at the Scholarship information session that the speaker said they "STRONGLY PREFERRED" that we turn in a financial aid form. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I was getting mixed messages. They really want us to turn it in, but we don't have to? She said it isn't a need-based scholarship, but obviously it would be wonderful for those who do need the money for school.

My parents told me today that they are unwilling to release all of that financial information to the school (they like their privacy). My parents are willing to pay for school at this point (I realize that I'm very fortunate in that respect). I want to apply for the scholarship, but I wonder if I'll be able to if I can't complete the FAFSA. I don't want them to not even consider me because I don't have the financial aid application on file. I know this is a question for the nursing department, but this is just some of my late breaking news, so I thought I'd share/vent.

Thanks all :specs:

I take it you're decided 100% to go Generic?? I'm still torn ... I'd kill for the Baptist Scholarship, not even for the tuition money, because I figure it'd be a wash since that money I'd save on tuition would go towards living expenses, but the guaranteed employment is clutch ... so still in limbo.

As far as the financial aid: do you even need your parent's information? Are you classified as a dependent to them? I've been living on my own for the past few years, and whenever I filled out the FAFSA, I didn't need any of their information (I think it did ask for their names/phone numbers, but that's not "top secret" for us since you could find it in the White Pages, ha), but nothing further as far as income, SS#'s, etc. I agree with the mixed messages statement, but I think they really urge filling out the fin aid form because many people simply don't because they don't believe they will qualify. Let us know what you wind up doing!

SeminoleJenn,

Hey thanks for the information. I was able to fill out the FAFSA in like 15 minutes without any of my parents information. Can I ask you a question since you seem to be "in the know" about these things..? Now that I thought back after finishing it, I worked with The Princeton Review proctoring SAT tests on the weekends and probably made a total of $200-$300 in the year 2008, but I put $0 for everything since I haven't had a job (and I honestly forgot about it until this moment). In addition to that I don't have that W-2 anymore. I know this sounds bad. Are they gonna come get me now?:o I haven't filed either because I don't have an income. My whole FAFSA is just my name, social and then a bunch of zeros.

Anyways...........yes you caught me,:specs: I did decide on the Generic Program for sure, and I'm also applying for the Baptist Scholarship ( I hope I have a chance!). I agree with you, its not the tuition money, its that guaranteed employment thats the real prize. I wish I could help you decide between Generic and Accelerated. Were you able to talk to any of the nursing advisers? Feel free to bounce ideas or thoughts off of me, and I'll try to help you as much as I can. Keep me updated

I'm turning my acceptance letter in for Accelerated this afternoon ... weirrrd that in a little over a year I'll be a legitimate nurse!! I know the program will be intense, but I know I can handle it ... I took 17 credit hours this summer and am taking 21 now while still working, so I know I'm prepared to give up my life for a year!

I'm going to get the background check done in a week at North Campus ... did you need to bring anything besides an ID? Do they need past employer information, previous addresses, anything like that? (Just wondering because I'll have to search to find that info...)

Have you gotten the TB vaccine yet? CPR certification? I'm so stressed with all these things I need to do, it seems near impossible to fit them in between work and school!

SeminoleJenn,

I'm glad you were able to decide. I don't think theres any reason why you wouldn't succeed in the Accelerated program, your gonna do great, seriously!

I actually did my background check at the Kendall Campus. All you need is your ID and the receipt saying that you paid the $46 or however much it was. You just fill out a short form, they fingerprint you, and its over. When your background check is done they'll send you a really informal email to your MDC account saying that you passed your background check. You need to print that email out and bring it to orientation along with the rest of your health forms.

I finished all of it this past week, since Generic orientation is tomorrow and they said we had to have it all done by then if we wanted to register for classes. My CPR certification I did at the end of summer semester cause I figured if I didn't get in, at least I'd be CPR certified, you know? :specs:

Yea, your a busy girl, I really admire your dedication. You'll get it all done, just try to get all of the appointments scheduled within a reasonable amount of time and take a deep breath, you'll be fine. Let me know if theres anything I can help you with paperwork-wise, some of it was confusing for me, but I just called school and asked for clarification.

Best of luck to you, and hopefully we'll see each other in the Spring!

Does anyone want to meet up tomorrow morning? (I have nooo idea what I'm wearing yet)

Does anyone know which is better? i accepted the accelerated, but I am thinking it might be too much. the only difference between generic and acceleralated is one semester??? is it worth it?

Hey Tony,

I don't know that I can give an opinion on which one is better. Both are going to be challenging for sure, but the Accelerated is going to be more challenging because of the time constraint. Yes, I believe the only difference between the two programs is one semester. I ended up choosing the Generic because I wanted more time to learn everything. You can do it, and it could be worth it. You'll finish a whole semester sooner! If your having doubts try going to the School of Nursing and see if you can talk to an adviser there, maybe they can help clarify how big a difference it really is. Hope that helped.

Best of Luck,

MDCupcake

MDCUPCAKES,

Yes, I was at the orientation and they said I was stuck with accelerated. there was no way to change it. However, I am hoping they accept me for the Baptist scholar. If so, it will change my status to Generic again. Thanks MDCUPCAKES. Who are you, should I see you in school?

Tony,

If you got the scholarship that would be great! Who am I?? Well, I don't know that I'm quite ready to reveal my "true identity", since I have a name that is extremely uncommon. For now I'll have to stick to my "secret allnurses identity." Maybe once school starts. If I meet a Tony, I'll make sure to ask them if they're on allnurses. Good luck with Baptist!
