Hey I found out last night, I got into the days RN program:yeah:, i was just wondering if there is anyone else on here who did????

i started in aug. of last year, and i really like mci vb. i would advise you to study for the teas and do your best. with my class, it came down to who did the best on the teas as to who got accepted into the program. i had a few classmates in pre-reqs, who had straight a's, not get accepted because their teas scores were just ok.

also, these classes are not for the average student. total commitment is required. the first few mods of sciences (a&p 1&2, micro) and gen-eds are hard, but nothing compared to what comes after them. i just finished a round of clinicals, each of which required a care plan... each care plan took at least 10hrs to complete (i took even longer as did most), they had to be turned in within 48hrs after the clinical day, and was 8-10pages. normally you have 2-3 clinicals a week and the care plans have to be done for each one. i lost a lot of sleep that week. this is not an easy program!! make sure your ready before investing all that money :)

Thanks for the extra info about the clinicals and careplans! I haven't gotten there yet, but I'm excited to. I've heard about those care plans and knew they were in intense, but I didn't realize they were 8-10 pages or at least 10 hours! Wow!

How many did you start with and how many do you have now? I've heard that the classes get really small really quickly around that time- but I've also met some that had a great rate (started with 25 and 21 graduated!) Of course I'm biased, but I think we have a very strong group! :)

we have a strong group, too :) we've lost seven (down to 23) but i would be surprised if we lost anymore...unless someone's family/personal life demands it. although, we are coming up on med-surg and i hear that's where you loose the most people. it's gonna be tough.

care plans suck. most of those hours are research finding lab values, medications, interventions, diseases, etc. your prep for doing them won't be much. they expect you to step up and use your critical thinking skills, kinda forcing you to start thinking like a nurse. oh, and get ready for nclex style exam questions. not fun. if you have time now, go to your local library and check out a care plan and nclex book. just glance over them to get a feel for what you have in store. i would have loved if someone had told me that when i started!

In study group today, we were talking about getting a NCLEX review book, but thought maybe to hold off until we got the nursing classes. Maybe I will pick one up after all! It hadn't even crossed my mind to look at a care plan book- but I think I will now! Thanks!

VB Girlie and Nacho- Thank you all for all the info. Are you both in the RN or LPN? To be honest, reading this I feel intimidated. I have made good grades at TCC after a 20 year break from previous college. I had a teacher at TCC say I should do RN and the advisor said it also, but I wonder if I would be able to do it. It sounds sort of scary. I have to study alot for the A's unlike my daughter, who gets A's and barely looks at her books. Any other info would be great. Anything at all...... I was going to call and maybe schedule an appt to meet with the admissions. I also feel nervous about the test. When I took chemistry at TCC, I realized that I don't remember much algebra. You don't really use it later. I would love any recommendations at all. Anything!!! Thank you.

If you are dropped from the program do you still have to pay the full amount? Are people dropping voluntarily because it is so difficult or failing? Do you have any older people? I am 43. Well, I know what it is like to be the oldest in the class. I have had a couple of the classes at TCC where I think they thought I was the professor. I am not sure how I got old so quickly. Ha.

The drops are usually because of failing or absences. Because the classes are only five weeks long, they have a very strict 80% attendance policy. If you're class meets twice a week, then you can only miss twice. If you get sick or your kids get sick or if there's a family emergency, then it's really hard. If you do have to drop out, then you have to wait for the next round to come through if there's a spot available (usually 3-4 months later).

As for finances, it depends on when you drop and your lenders. Financial Aid is distributed in "semesters" - just like traditional schools - fall, spring, summer. If you drop out before 10% complete, you get back 90% (actually- your lenders do - and you will still owe them for the portion used) and if it's after another percent, then you owe a certain percent, etc. For federal funds (this is a federal rule, not MCI's rule)- if you withdraw before 60%, it's prorated. It does say "if a studen withdraws after completing at least one course within a semester, the return of funds requirement does not apply."

We do have "older" people- we have everyone. You may not be the oldest in the class! I think our class has a great commraderie and we have 20s, 30s, and 40s.

It is intimidating - it's fast paced and it's a lot of money. It's not for everyone- but it is for a lot of people and a lot of people not only survive, but thrive. You're current 4.0 already shows that you're dedicated and a hard worker. It definitely worth looking into! I think you should go for the RN! I do recommend getting the study guide and working through a few problems to brush up on your skills!

The next mod and final opportunity to get the prereqs starts on March 30, so I'd try to get an appt if you want to start in May.

(I'm in the RN program)

(I don't know much about the LPN program- but I do know that it's 12 months and seems to start more often than the RN program. The RN program is 15 months)

Hi! I'm meeting with a Rep on Friday to review my transcripts and see what I need to do to get started. I'm pretty sure I'll need to take the Pre-Reqs starting March 30th. But not sure if I want to try and get in on the May program or wait til the Sept program. I've been lurking on this site for the past couple days trying to get info on the programs and what to expect. I'm picking up a study guide for the TEAS tomorrow, and am ordering a NCLEX-RN study giude from Amazon. I took some gen ed classes at TCC in 2001 and 2002, but nothing since then, and I'm pretty sure that my ability to to quote Backyardigans episodes from memory won't help me pass. How intense is the first 6 months of the program? The rep told me to think about whether or not I want to push forward and try to get in the RN program starting in May or if I want to wait and try for Sept. Oh, and I'm gonna be going for the Nights/Weekends classes. Anyone else going that route? I'm excited and nervous at the same time!

It's hard to say how "intense" it is - some have no problems and some really struggle with time management. Most students have a harder time in the night program mainly b/c they're also working full time. I'm in days and a lot of people in my class work, too. :) Good luck at your appt tomorrow! (if you go on a tour, it may smell pretty bad in part of the building...we're dissecting pigs tomorrow!)

Thanks Nacho! My appt went very well, but didn't have enough time to take a tour. I'll be gong back Thursday to take the first part of the TEAS. I'm applying for the Sept Nights/Weekends RN Program. I'm hoping to start my pre reqs on the March 30th term, and be done in July. I'm really excited, but know it will be a lot of work. I'm very fortunate that I don't have to try and do this and work at the same time. I currently stay home with my three kids (3, 2, & 5 months), so I'll be staying with them during the day and taking the classes at night and clinicals on weekends. If you have any advice on preparing for the program, it would be very much appreciated! I do have one question, do most students already have a specific specialty that they would like to go in to? I hope your pig dissection went well today! Can't say I'm disappointed to have missed the smell! :)
