mcg/kg/min to ml/hr

Published

The question is: A doctor orders a drug at a rate of 3 mcg/kg/min.The patient weighs 155 lb.The pharmacist sends a solution of the drug 200mg in 250 ml of D5W.

What is the formula for figuring out the ml/hr? I have figured out the mcg/min and its 211 mcg/min

I use the following formula to solve this type problem:

(dose x weight x 60) / concentration, where 60 is a constant.

It is important to remember when working this type problem that all information must be expressed in like units (i.e., dose and concentration must both be mcg's).

Its simple. Use dimesional analysis

First thing you need to do is convert lbs to kg. There are 2.2 lbs to 1kg, so 155lbs/2.2lbs equals 70.4kg

Next plug in you kg into the equation which is: 3mcg/70.4kg/min

that equals 211.3 mcg/min

So now set up your problem using dimesional analysis: 211mcg/min x 60min/1hr x 1mg/1000mcg x 250ml/200mg which equals: 15.8 or 16 ml/hr. Is this correct?

Just make sure everything cancels out. minutes cancelled out to make hours and mcg were converted to mg and then mg cancelled out and so you are just left with ml/hr

Hope this helped.

OP is the answer I gave correct ?

the question is: a doctor orders a drug at a rate of 3 mcg/kg/min.the patient weighs 155 lb.the pharmacist sends a solution of the drug 200mg in 250 ml of d5w.

what is the formula for figuring out the ml/hr? i have figured out the mcg/min and its 211 mcg/min

1. determine the kg 155 kg/2.2 lbs ____ kg

2. plug in your formula 3 mcg/___ kg/min = ______ mcg/min

3. find how many mls per min the pharmacist sends a solution of the drug 200mg in 250 ml of d5w

200 mg / 250 ml = ______ mcg per min / x ml

4. convert 200 mg to mcgs

___ mcg / 250 ml = ____ mcg per min / x ml

x = _____ ml in 1 min

5. to get ml in a hour, multiply ml per minute by 60 minutes =

___ ml per hr.
