MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

I have applied to MCG's MSN-CNL Program to start in Fall 2010, and I am wondering if current/past students could tell me when (as in what month) they received a phone call for an interview or acceptance/rejection letters.

Additionally, I applied to the Athens Campus program, so will the interview be held in Athens, or will I need to drive to Augusta? Thanks for helping me plan ahead :) I really hope I am the type of candidate they are looking for!

I had my interview today for Athens. I think it went well; guess we'll see come April!

Hey everyone!

I could really use some advice here...I graduated with a bachelor's degree on Exercise Science from Georgia State University in 2004, decided that the cardiac rehab/exercise field wasn't for me, so I plan on applying to the CNL program at MCG for Fall 2011. Their requirements really intimidate me because my GPA isn't the greatest (too ashamed to mention), but I really want to become an RN. Since I don't have the GPA requirement to get in, do you think I could rely on my essay and GRE scores? What else can I do to help me get in? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

This is ONLY in my opinion, but maybe it will help:

If you have a phenomenal GRE score, then you probably have a fighting chance. If you haven't done all of the pre-req's already, it'd be a great way to bring up your GPA some. Plus, if you do well in those pre-req classes, it'll show that you're really serious about becoming an RN and are willing take on all the hard work of this program. You also have to get three letters of recommendation (preferably from past professors, but if you've been working for awhile, employers are fine, too), so those can help you out, too!

If all other application materials (interview, GRE, recommendations, essay) are stellar, then I'd say you'd make a good candidate despite a sub-par GPA.

However, I've heard that if you do not maintain a B-average while enrolled in the CNL program, you will be kicked out, but that goes for pretty much ANY Master's program of any discipline!

Just out of curiousity chendamoni, do you know if you have been accepted yet? Also, what is your academic and professional background? I'm curious because I am trying to assess if my education (Masters in exercise science) and professional background (director of cardiac rehab in a local hospital) would be sufficient to enter the program at MCG without having to retake all of the prerequisites. Must mention that it has been more than 10 years since I graduated with my Masters. I know this may be a lot of supposition on your part...but I am interested to hear what you have to say?

No, I do not know if I have been accepted, and I will not know until mid-April. A brief academic and professional background can be found on my About Me page on this website.

The CNL Requirements (http://www.mcg.edu/son/cnlreqs.htm) state that Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology courses must be within the last ten years.

I feel like your and avigrrl80's questions could best be answered if you e-mailed or called the CNL Program Coordinator yourselves. I've e-mailed her in the past and she responded, and I know others have called her and gotten the information they were looking for. It sounds like you have a lot of great experience, but I don't know how that all plays into the application process. All I (and probably everyone else on this message board) have to offer are personal opinions - not sound advice or information.

Ditto chendamoni. It appears that the prerequisite courses are non-negotiable. The staff at MCG are very helpful in answering any questions you may have. Good luck!

I also applied for the MSN CNL for Fall of 2010. I had my interview on Feb 16 with just one faculty member and I thought it was very laid back and went well. I am just patiently waiting for April to get here so we can all hear back. I called the program director on Tuesday and she told me she was sending the list to admissions that afternoon... so it shouldnt be long now. Good luck! I hope we both get in. Are you for the Augusta campus or Athens?

sorry saw that you applied to Athens. What are you doing to keep your mind off of it. It seems like its the only thing I can think of right now...

Oh, I have a hard time getting my mind off of it, too, and I am VERY nervous! However, I figure that there's no reason to stress out over it until I have a final answer either way.

I think you're right about it not being long now if she sent the list on Tuesday!

Yes very true. I think it just feels like forever because last Feb. I quit my job and went to get my CNA, then I got my job in the ER and took like 6 classes plus the GRE to get ready for this program. I had my application complete in Sept. so I guess the waiting game continues. We will need to keep in touch to get through the waiting game. I have to work the next 3 nights in a row so that will keep my mind off of it for a little while! :D

Does everyone's status still say 'Ready for Review'? Just wondering since we know that admission decisions have been made.

I just checked, and mine still says Ready For Review.

I think I am going to stop checking online because it's too nerve-wrecking each time. I'll just wait for the letter, haha!
