MCC Nursing Applicants for 2016

U.S.A. Michigan

Hey everyone!

Last year's thread caught so much momentum, I figured I'd give it another shot for this year! Applications were due Feb 15th for the next cycle of the nursing program. So, who's applied? What are your scores? What classes have you taken? And anything else you can think of...

I'll start- I applied this year (after a chaotic time of academic indecision, an engagement, and a baby)! My scores were a 3.87 gpa and an 88 on the HESI. I don't feel super confident with those scores, but I'm trying to stay positive.

I can't wait to find out if I'm in once April/May rolls around! I hope to find some other people to talk to that are going through this journey as well.

I started the program in January and got in with a 3.88 and 84 HESI. You have nothing to worry about!! Good luck! :)

Thanks for the encouragement! How is the schedule for the program? I've been trying to get an idea of it, but haven't had any luck.

The semester is divided up into two eight-week segments. The first eight weeks, you will have four classes-- two lecture classes (all lecture classes will include all 40 students) and two lab classes (eight students per lab class). I finish my first eight weeks next week, and needless to say, it flew by!

You will begin the second eight-week portion of the semester after these four classes have been completed. They consist of one clinical at a hospital (once a week for eight weeks) and a lecture class (twice a week for 4 weeks-- from here on out, I believe the lecture classes are four weeks long!)

This may seem confusing right now; it's pretty overwhelming and in-your-face at first, but you will definitely get used to the pace!

Breaking it down time-wise: each of the two lecture classes for the first eight weeks are three hours long. I'm not sure if it changes year to year, but it was from 8-11 am for us. You have two lab classes; a three-hour lab and a six-hour lab. The days and times vary for these, are there are only eight students per lab class split amongst 40 students in the program per start date. All classes are assigned to you. Hope this helped a bit!

That does, yes! I was wondering if you had to be available for like a 9-5 work week type of deal or if there were other times too. I'll have to figure a lot of things out since I have children and a husband that works nights (as of now).

Yeah you'll definitely make it work. There are many students in my class who are parents, students who work full time, have more than one job, etc. I've been able to work regularly this semester so far (Fridays and Saturdays) although I'm not sure if I'll be able to work as much with the four-week classes since the coursework will be more rigorous.

Your schedule will vary based on when your lab classes fall. I have class three days a week; other students have it two days a week, and others have it spread out through the week. So as of now it's pretty unpredictable until you get your actual schedule.

I'm so excited to find out! It's almost March so I guess I'll just try to find ways to keep busy. I left a message for an advisor at MSU this morning to get more info about the RN-BSN partnership between the 2 schools. It seems like so many hospitals are looking for that BSN.

I'm applying with a 3.85 and a 94 on my Hesi. A&P killed my GPA & what hurts the most is that I was HALF a POINT (not %!!!) away from an A in the class.

But do you have your CPR/BLS already? If not, you could take that class that's usually taken in the 2nd year of he program: PHED-2070? But otherwise, we need PHED-2026. I need to actually go in and see a mcc advisor to see if I already have it covered by one of my MSU classes already.

I'm taking 2070 right now. I wanted to get all of the co-requisites out of the way because I heard those can factor into your start date. How did you figure your gpa? I got an A- in A&P so the advisor told me I had a 3.87 :(

During the selective admissions meeting, we were told to google "GPA calculator" and she (who actually is an advisor) did it for us on an overhead screen bc someone had a question about how to do it exactly. And u have to input how many credits each grade is worth, & it equals out to 3.85. But that's close enough!
