MBA with Nursing Degree

Published

Hello all,

I noticed some people have MBA degrees along with their nursing degrees. Has the MBA degree helped. If so, how has the degree helped (promotions, etc). Has anyone used their combined MBA/(BSN or MSN) degree to gain entrance into the health admin (health policy) field? If so, how hard is it to gain entrance into this field? What type of opportunities are available to those who have an MBA while in the nursing field. Thanks for your input.

In regards to your question about MBA's my cousin got hers. She has an assocaitaes degree from nursing but before she became a nurse she was an accounting major. I myself majored in accounting too and got my MBA. MBA degree can be pretty difficult if you have no accounting background. I had a few non business people in my MBA classes and they failed since you have to get an A or B for the class to count. MY cousin said she would advise a nurse that wanted to further their educated to get a masters in education. Hope that helps you out.

Thanks for your reply. But I think you misunderstood my question. I too am a career changer and have an MBA already, but was wondering how the MBA helps in nursing. Does it help in gaining promotions. Does it allow you to become eligible for administrative positions in the hospital. In other words, what type of opportunities are available to those who have an MBA while in the nursing field. Thanks.

Disregard this post. I found the information by googling :)

MODS, I couldn't find a way to delete this post. If possible, can you delete the post for me? Thanks.

I have been a critical care RN for 24 years, working in every kind of unit and also in the cath lab. I have been a charge person in these areas, but never in an official management position. I will finish my MBA in May, 2008 and I attribute becoming the Director of the Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Cath Lab, and the Electrocardiography department to my MBA program. The job required 6 years of management experience, and they took me (16 interviews later) with no "experience". I believe you can do anything you put your mind to, and the MBA program will definitely prepare you to reach that goal.

Hello,

I actually will be getting my MBA this Fall. I recently started to look into the ABSN program. I was thinking to take pre-reqs this fall and spring to start nursing school next spring/summer. Ultimately I want to go into healthcare administration and figure clinical experience would be helpful. I was wondering what job opportunities would be available to someone holding both degrees.

And also if anyone has gone onto pursue their BSN after MBA, can you provide some insight on how nursing school went for you and how it has affected your career. I really would appreciate feedback!

I'm in my 7th year of school. I have certified in the IT field tremendously and then got my MBA in Health Administration. I am currently working on my BSN too. These are KEY fields in today's society if you are good at IT have a BSN and to top it off have an MBA then your given a chance to prove yourself even if you don't have experience.

I work for the state and came in with no experience except my education. My education really gave me an edge with working with various applications as well as having a good foundation for biostatistics and Epidemiology. I work part time, make great money and they are VERY flexible with my schedule because I am diverse in my education.

Specifically I work with budgets, epidemiology, project management, needs assessments, statistical analysis, data analysis, HIV/AIDS, STI
