May 2011 NAU accelerated nursing program hopefuls!

Published

I'm finishing up some prerequisites and taking the HESI test on Tuesday for the January deadline. I'm a bit nervous! I wanted to see if there are any other accelerated program hopefuls applying for NAU this spring!?

Also, for the HESI, I heard that there is a&p, chem, bio, math, NO physics, but is there a grammar and a reading section?

Good luck to all in the application process!

Thanks nomad, I'm sure you'll make it! I was nervous when ab didn't get in, so I know the feeling! Not to sound self-absorbed, but I'm kinda befuddled as to why I didn't make it too...I already have my EMT, ACLS, BLS, CPR, and experience working in an ER, my recs were great (both gave me a copy, haha), volunteer experience, work experience, so I'm just kinda like what the hell. 4th isn't bad though, I just wish I could join in on the housing and planning discussion! Which... I'll stop hijacking the thread with my pity party and let you guys celebrate!!

I'd encourage you to be patient with this too unless Plan B is pretty cool. I'm for anyone who likes running - that's one reason my wife and I wanted to go to Flagstaff. I'm sure you know that it's basically a coin toss between Flagstaff and Boulder for the best running places in the US.

We're mid-30's. I'm coming from a career as an English teacher & track coach. My wife is a professional long-distance runner (and she is an RN though she's not working right now - the running is a lot more fun for her). For the last couple of years we've hosted other international athletes when they're in the country.

Otherwise, best wishes to everyone who's still trying to nail down pre-reqs and applying for scholarships. I have a feeling these next few weeks are going to fly by!

Hi guys, just checking, are there others out there who've been accepted that have a class or two IP? If so, when do your school semesters end (if other than a course through NAU) and will your schools be able to provide you transcripts by May 16th?

I have 2 IPs that end the week before the program starts. I was going to call NAU to see how I would be able to work that out. My grades would be available by 5/13 but school starts on the 16th so I am curious as to how this will work. Lifelearner1, are you in the same boat?

I sure am mcardi. I just emailed ------ (he's probably so sick of my neverending questions by now!) to see what he says. I asked if perhaps a letter from the instructors or even the dean of the college would temporarily suffice if the school doesn't make the official transcripts available to me by the 16th... kinda nervous about it, but I think plenty of folks in previous programs have run into the same situation, so... we'll see. I'll let you know what he says. :)

Ok, so I heard back from NAU regarding my courses currently IP (reminder: I was worried about the official transcripts not being ready by the 16th): the advisor told me not to worry if the official transcripts for these last classes are not available by the program start date, but to just follow up with NAU once (and as soon as) the transcripts are made available from my school. Of course, he said to just be sure to take care of all the other items on the checklist on time! Phew!!!!! :)

I should add a cautionary note: if you have any doubts or concerns about this, pleeeease contact NAU personally and do not just take my word for it! I'm sure you guys would probably do so anyway, but I just wanted to make sure I put that out there. (Can you tell I was a paralegal in my former life? I think CYA is part of my DNA now!) ;) Oh well, my RN hubby says it'll come in handy in nursing! :) Anyway, for what it's worth, I hope this helps you mcardi and anyone else out there in the same boat!

Lifelearner1, thanks for the info. I know my official transcripts won't be ready until the 16th or later, so it's good to know! I have tons of questions for the nursing school so I will be calling them or e-mailing them tons as well! These few months will fly by and we'll soon be in Flagstaff, starting nursing school!

Hey all! Sorry I missed this forum for a few days. Classes got kind of hectic. Congrats to everyone else who got accepted! I dropped off my acceptance contract in person on Wednesday and got a chance to chat with a guy in the nursing office. He said this year was unusually competitive. They got 60 applicants last year...this year they got 120! So, needless to say, it was super competitive. Good job, everybody!

To those of you asking what Flagstaff is like.. that's a toughie. I lived in Flag for 7 years before I moved outside of town and sometimes it's no pickle. The cost of living is high and wages/employment is typically low. There's no two ways about it.

If you're looking for housing, stuff on the east side is going to be cheaper because it's not very nice. In fact, parts of it are downright slummy. If you find a cheap place on the west side, make sure you ask if it's on a hill. For some reason, Flagstaff was constructed as if it never snows here (it does) and the city typically doesn't do much to clean up the roads. Hehe, usually they just stack it all on the sidewalks and wait for it to melt. In other words, if you live on a hill it can be a big problem. Our winter typically lasts from october-november to march-april. Last year it was still snowing in may, so it all depends.

The hiking and stuff here is great. I'm not too outdoorsy so it doesn't do much for me. There's a lot of hippies and hikers. That's either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view, haha :) When is everyone coming out? I hope we'll all be good friends. :)

Hey Lifelearner, I was a paralegal in my former life as well!! I get the CYA thing, and I think it will stand in our stead in our next career as well! : ) What sort of law were you involved with? I worked in the county attorney's office in Flag then transferred down to PHX and got into the better paying, but draining and exhausting, world of litigation. Don't miss those days at all!! You still working as a paralegal?

I have one course IP, and was wondering the same thing. I figured I'd try to take my final early so that I can get the transcript in time, but I guess we should all double check to be sure. Plus, given that we have two months to tie up so many loose ends before plunging into this challenge, it's probably fairly optimistic of me to think I could finish early!!

Street, I totally agree with your assessment of FLG. In fact I wanted to settle there after I graduated with my BS from NAU, but found the COL and wages were waaay to divergent! It is tricky to find housing that's both reasonably priced and reasonably nice. Roommates are probably the best decision!

Looking forward to meeting everyone. I'm so excited!!

Wow, 120 applicants? That's a 25% acceptance rate! Congrats again to everyone; that's a great accomplishment!

Those who know Flagstaff, what side of town is NAU considered to be? I would like to live as close to campus as I can since I don't know how to drive in snow! I know University Heights has been mentioned before and I hope to look around that area the next time I can get up there.

Hi guys, I haven't been on here in awhile. Congrats to everyone who got accepted! And, RunMT, I'm sure you'll get a call. The adviser told me that every year 5-10 wait-listers get in. So don't despair!

As far as housing goes, NAU is considered the west side of town. It's a big campus, and the nursing department is on the extreme south end of it. So, anywhere down near Lake Mary Road would be a great place to live, and there are plenty of apartment complexes there. Alternatively, the downtown area (north end of campus) is also nice, there are less apartments but more cute little houses. I've got a nice 2 bedroom with a yard in downtown for $900/month.

Flag is also a really bike-friendly town, and many people find it easier to get around town and campus by bike than by car. Parking permits are horribly expensive on campus, and it's usually faster to ride!

Can't wait to meet all of you in May :)
