Maxim or MHM

I have recently completed another corrections assignment through Maxim. They are not terrible, but they are not that great either. The office I deal with seems to be a bunch of Rookies, and they just promoted one of them, so that doesn't say much. My biggest complaint with them is their seeming lack of sense of urgency to move things along. I have had to wait and wait and wait while they take their time doing things. When I first signed on it was waiting for the "credentialing coordinator" to get around to review my file so they could submit it to the correctional facility. Also a long wait that has delayed me getting back into a facility after taking off a while. They also don't seem to understand the concept of what constitutes a "travel nurse" re: subsidies for housing and tried to tell me that I had to STAY at least 50 miles away from the facility that I was working for (this is on an assignment for which I traveled to a different state) Uh, those rules regarding when you are considered away from home for tax purposes are not really that hard to understand, and that is their PRIMARY BUSINESS! I have been a bit unhappy with this office that I have been working through, but they processed my time cards on time, etc. HOWEVER, they DID make a big mistake on one check, and I suspect that if I had not caught them on it, I would have continued to be compensated at the wrong rate. They did correct it very quickly, but be sure and double check your compensation rate. I worked through one of their offices in another state, and found them to be very competent. I think that it is highly dependent upon the people staffing that local office. Good luck!

It's been a few months since this topic was started but I am also looking at the North Carolina travel position through Maxim. I'm just at the beginning stages of the process. I would love some advice and insight on what to expect. What kind of housing do they set you up with? Are there rifts between Regular staff and Travelers? What is staffing like? Which prisons are the hardest to work in, the best? What does the orientation process consist of? If I work evenings or nights will I be the only RN there? I know that 13 weeks is not very long in the grand scheme of things but I want to know to expect if at all possible. It will be my first time traveling, first time correctional nursing and first time away from my home/family/friends for that long. Thanks!

Each prison is different. The first prison I worked with in CA was okay, but the other nurses could be difficult to work with. Most were okay, but they were extremely clique-ish and I found that I could not trust some that I thought I could trust. The second prison I worked in, in CA had much nicer staff, and was much more welcoming. They were union, so there was always a close watch over whether some perm staff was passed up on the list for overtime, and the OT was offered to an agency nurse. I doubt if NC is union, so that will be completely different. Just as each hospital is different, so the prisons will be. In Texas I worked at several that I REALLY didn't like, and one was my favorite, and I still keep in touch with some staff that were or are there.

Maxim overall was okay. I would consider going on another assignment with them. The hiring process was the most frustrating, just waiting while they took their time and dragged their feet to get the initial stuff done. I really had to stay on top of them for that. But my recruiters still stay in touch, just in case I would like to take another assignment. I hope your experience is a good one. Wish you well.

I'm a traveler at a prison in NC and I make good money. I am contracted through supplemental. I bring home about 1200 a week. There's a tad bit of animosity between one of the travel nurses and the state nurses, just because there are only 2 state nurses on first shift and 4 travelers. That means the one traveler gets to be charge occasionally but she doesn't have the same access as the state nurse does. For example travelers don't have access to doing lab requisitions and getting into OPUS.
