Maternity Leave

Published

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was aware of what the maternity leave situation is like in Florida. I currently live in Canada and we have a fabulous maternity leave situation here. I believe all pregnant women are entitled to 12 months of paid leave. My husband and I are thinking about moving to Florida and this issue is very important to us.

Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

All I can say is WOW! 12 months. In my experience, most places in the states only offer 6-12 WEEKS.

I'd be interested to read others input...

You won't find that anywhere in the States. If you want maternity leave like that, best keep living in Canada..... :o

Sadly, the best you can do here is unpaid family leave (if you have no paid time off (PTO) saved up)------but it's not 12 months of paid leave---it will be mostly UNpaid!. I wish we were more like Canada or Australia, when it came to maternity leave and pay.

the above post before mine is accurate. You may see, at the most, 12 or 16 weeks' paid leave, and that is only *AFTER* you have worked enough hours to build that up. Paid leave of absence is simply not guaranteed by any government of State or Federal level.

If you believe all women are entitled to 12 months' paid leave, you are not alone. But you wont' find employers here in the USA that share that sentiment, any place. Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news. It's not fun to try and work out leave for maternity here, never has been.

Note, it's not necessarily PAID. Sadly, the only way you will paid to take leave is if you have worked long enough to accrue it---and it will take a LONG time to accrue 12 months' worth. LONG time.
