Specializes in ICU.

I am currently in the process of completing my Masters in Critical Care Nursing.

One of my mandatory subjects is Leadership and Management (uurrgghhhh)

my current assignment is titled:

"Management is about the how, where as leadership defines what and why a task is accomplished. Discuss".

it has to be 3000 words and I am just stumped as to how to even what I should put in it, how to structure it.. Everything.

Any ideas?

Give me some intrinsic illness to study any day....

Do you work as a Staff RN? If so, I am sure that there is something your managers/leaders has asked you and the other staff nurses to do and explained the why. For example, if you work inside of a hospital setting, I am sure that there is some quality initiative or new practice that staff nurses were asked to implement based upon a need to improve an outcome.

As for understanding the structure of the paper, you should look at your rubic and talk to your professor. Your professor is the best person to talk to about the papers he/she assigns.

I am a RN in Australia in an Intensive Care unit. I understand how to structure it as to how to have the paper formatted, but I mean, as whether i should start with a definition of both leadership and management, then discuss the differences, then why they are two seperate things... ETCI have been at my new job for a whole 6 months and there is a lot of politics and jealousy so nobody has been any help, apart from one nurse who just happened to have read an article that asked the same question as the assignment title.

Other than that- zip. :)

The language of the question is a bit odd, at least to this American.

Managers focus on the bureaucratic, the nuts & bolts of the task, issue, or problem. The leader is the visionary; what is the issue, why is it an issue, and why is it important for your team to achieve this goal? The leader wants buy-in, ideally wants people motivated to achieve this, not just doing it because they must.

So compare and contrast, probably using a specific issue to show how the leader would approach the task, vs the manager's approach.

But, consult your rubric and instructor to confirm your instructions.

How did it go? Sorry I didn't come across this thread earlier.

The question makes perfect sense to me - LOL. I usually try to apply metaphors to facilitate understanding of complex concepts, and I think that the "Policy & Procedure" metaphor applies in this case. Leaders establish Policy (overall strategy/direction and ground rules) designed to support the organization's goals and objectives. Managers then have to establish the procedures that will be used. They incorporate current evidence, regulatory requirements, etc into the procedure. They are responsible for ensuring that: 1) staff are adequately prepared & supervised; and 2) monitoring compliance;
