    So, I can't send PM...apparently I haven't made enough posts. I didn't take chemistry there, I took it in HS....so I don't know what to say!

My everyone's clinicals in 2nd semester are at emerson for maternity and pediatrics, acute rehab at new england rehab in woburn, and community is a bunch of different places. Labor and delivery wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Being a guy in a predominately female occuaption is tough, but some of the nurses in labor and delivery were real nasty towards guys (and so is one of the professors for maternity). It was pretty cool though, got to see a c-section and take care of all the little bambinos. Rehab and pediatrics aren't bad but community just plain sucks! This semester definitely burns you out.

hi james, thanks for giving us the low down on the second semester. it sounds like a lot of work. it must of been fun at emerson hosp for peds and labor delivery. i actually used to work there on north 6, medsurg/onc. i heard community nursing isnt too fun. im not too interested in that area of nursing. sorry the nurses, and instructor were nasty towards you, thats not nice or professional. next semester will be medsurg nursing, right? I wonder if you go to lowell general for that rotation. i heard new england rehab is a good place to work. well im glad you got through it... congrats

Peds wasnt that great because when my group was there, their weren't any kids lol. Next semester is med/surg and its at lahey and emerson. Fourth semester you can choose hospitals in the lowell area (which I will be doing because they are 5 min from my house).

    Kris-
when you say you spend the rest of the day reading/ practicing, is that practice in the open lab? How much time do really spend in there vs. how much they tell you in orientation? Do you have to go every day or a certain amount hours per weel? Sorry for so many questions... I have orientation on May 6th.
    Thanks
    Lyn

Practice in open lab/practice at home. We dont "have" to go to open lab. But if you want to learn the skill, and master it...you want to go as often as possible. Some people don't go at all and they fail every cert. They retake it and pass, but then their essential skills such as taking blood pressure, lung sounds, wound care are poor. Would you rather have a nurse that has mastered it..or half a**es it? I mean if you are a pro at it you don't have to go as often as others...but that's not usually the case. Plus, professors are there to help you, while at your house you're on your own. Hard to tell if you got the pulse right if no one knows what they are doing!

oh i see... thats good. I have been a CNA in a hospital for 15 years and I do tons of vital signs per shift, so I hope I could get the BP and pulse right!
What I need to pay attention to is how they want me to do things, that's important. Time to get rid of bad habits. At least I hope I won't need as much practice on that as someone who may be new to the task. Congrats for getting through (almost) the first semster, and thanks for answering my questions. Talk to you later.
