Married or not to work as nurse in UK?

Hello-

I will be graduating from a BSN program in May 2006 and understand that I need at least one year experience in order to apply for the NMC. However, I am currently engaged and trying to move to the UK and work as a nurse asap!

Any help would be appreciated. I am wondering if I should get my nursing licensure taken care of before getting married, because I'm worried that my visa might get mucked up in the process.

Anyone with any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Amy

Hi!

I can't believe you are in the same situation as me! but you have more info than I do. I was unaware that you had to have 1 year of experience before you could even register. I am devastated. I am graduating in May from a 2 year program. I assume that they mean one year of experience AFTER you pass the NCLEX, not after graduating? I do think that getting married first would be a good idea (that is what I was going to do)- then you probably won't have the headaches of work visas, etc. Were you planning to marry here or there? I wonder if that would also make a difference. I will watch to see what responses/advice you get none-the-less. In any event, good luck to you!

I'm so sorry that I brought you bad news!!

I have contacted a travel agency in the UK (continental travel nurse) and according to them and everything I've read at the NMC you must have one year post-graduate nursing experience, so after the NCLEX. Then you can send all your paperwork in. However, I have been advised to take my English Language test and start my paperwork about 5 months before I finish my first year in order to get things moving faster.

I'm just worried about getting a fiance visa because I've heard you can't work for a year and I'd rather keep my nursing license intact.

So we will get married in the UK, most likely September 2007.

Any other questions?

Amy

I think things look pretty dismal for me, but I so appreciate you opening my eyes to the situation! I will probably get married in the UK this summer, after I pass the NCLEX. It is not an option for me to stay here for another year while I get my year of experience, and if they don't allow me to get it there, then I guess that is that! The truth is, I went to nursing school to broaden my horizons, and give me more options in the healthcare field. My true love is biofeedback, and perhaps I can do that over there. It is a shame that they will miss out on having a much needed nurse, because I have been an excellent student, and would have been an asset to any organization over there. But I guess they know what they are doing! I wish you luck in your very bright future, and your planning will pay off for you for sure!!!! thanks again, A

Have you thought that things may be different if you are marrying a UK citizen? I would suggest sending someone an email at NMC and see if there is a way round this due to you moving to the UK due to marriage
