Congratulations! I did too!

Has anyone received any information about Scholarships?

Congrats! I was told that scholarships would be included in the acceptance letter

Orientation is May 15th and classes start May 26th!

Hello! Where did you find this information?

@Xiomara Reyes I meant with Taylor (the DEMSN advisor) in October and May 26th was noted as the start date. And then after being accepted, a few days later I received an email from her as a "welcome newly accepted students" and it said orientation was May 15th

Oh ok! I am currently at MU and I met with Taylor and she told me the start date was the day after MU graduation, which is May 17th. Looks like they might have pushed it back.

@Xiomara Reyes Oh maybe it is May 18th then. I just emailed her to ask

As of a couple of weeks ago I was told orientation the 15th and classes start the 18th:) on the housing front it seems like we're leaning toward Wauwatosa or something around there. We're considering subletting for the first couple of months so that we are able to choose a great place in person...

Interesting, Taylor just responded to me with the following:

Hi All:) I recently got my letter of acceptance for summer 2020 (Milwaukee) campus. I'm excited at the prospect but there are so many unknowns! For Instance, Marquette request a non-refundable deposit by mid-January and I don't know anything about my potential financial aid package. To add another layer of complication, I applied to seven schools and Marquette is the first that I've heard back from. I don't expect to hear back from the others from weeks, or possibly months.

That said, I am likely to accept and move from California. If anyone hears of a good housing opportunity (preferably close to campus or close to a large park:) for a grad student with a 50lb. perfect black lab please let me know!

You can find me on facebook by typing "Sonoma County Steve Oak" into google. Please request to be my friend, as that is likely inevitable (and is the only way you can see my profile:)

Hi!
I’m coming from California too! I applied to DePaul, Marquette, and the University of San Francisco. I’ve been accepted to DePaul (already paid the non refundable deposit) and Marquette (need to pay by Feb 5th). I won’t hear back from San Fran until March. But after some serious thinking I think San Frans tuition is just going to be too expensive (97k!!!) even though I’d love to stay in Cali. So it’s very likely I’m going with Marquette since the tuition is the cheapest. Need to do a bit more decision making over this week. I’m also a bit nervous too! I’ve never been to Wisconsin and just thinking about the housing situation is giving me anxiety!

If anyone is familiar with Milwaukee I’d def love to hear which areas are the best/safest to live. I’m married but unfortunately my husband is not able to come with me out there so I’m going to be on my own. Also if anyone is looking for roommates I’m possibly looking!

Cool:) In general they say it's hard to go wrong living on the east side of town. Riverwest can be hit or miss (looks cool to me!), areas like Bayview, Third Ward and Brewers Hill all very reputable and safe. We're leaning toward Wauwatosa (which is very quiet, establish family vibe, boring, convenient and perfect for us). Washington heights CAN be good, but you need to know which area to avoid living in. Washington highlands also apparently very nice and quiet... we're considering subletting for a couple of months which will give us a chance to look around:) hope to meet you out there!

Congratulations on your acceptance! I live in Atlanta but will be relocating back home to Milwaukee for the program ? I grew up in West Allis, WI but my parents have lived and worked their entire lives all over Milwaukee. I agree with everything Steven says, but I figured I'd offer some additional insight as well!

If safety is your priority, I highly recommend finding a place west (Wauwatosa is a hot spot for a lot of Milwaukee grad students!) Elm Grove and Brookfield are also pretty safe. I feel like most of West Allis is good, but my mom recommends staying West of 90th and North of Oklahoma (or close to West Allis Memorial Hospital where there's lots of security.) Wauwatosa, or Tosa as us cheeseheads call it, is definitely a suburb, but it also has an adorable downtown area with bars, restaurants, etc. There's lots of parks too which is nice!

Marquette is known to have a SUPER safe campus with great security, but it isn't exactly known to be in the safest area of MKE. So I would be hesitant to recommend living within walking distance of school. Personally, I would be wary living anywhere between Marquette and Miller Park. Anywhere east of Marquette is good (more expensive though), just make sure you stay east of I-43 and don't go too far north!

Sorry this is so specific, and I hope I didn't offend anyone else with Milwaukee connections. Major cities like Milwaukee are constantly changing so I acknowledge that this may not be spot on, but I felt obligated to share my perspective to those who have no experience with living around Milwaukee. I don't mean to perpetuate any stereotypes of any regions or populations within the area, I only intend to help my peers make informed decisions about the safety of the communities they choose to call home ?

If anyone has any different perspectives, feel free to share! I know the Wisconsin winters might be a little colder than what you Californians are used to, but I gotta say after living in Atlanta for several years, I can't wait to return! ? There's a lot to love about Milwaukee!

Thank you guys so much for your input. I really appreciate it! It was very helpful and gives me a little more peace of mind. Also congrats as well on your acceptances! I look forward to meeting you all!

Lastly, does anyone know how long the program is? I’ve seen 18 month and I’ve also seen 18-21 months?

For those here who have gotten accepted, how long after you submitted did you receive your letter? And did it come to the email you used in the application or the Marquette email they sent out to you?
