how many times can you take the nclex?

Published

i have a friend who failed the nclex rn twice ... and he applied in nevada ... he is afraid to take it again, because he thinks that if he fail for the 3rd time, he will need to enroll in refresher course ... is that true? can you only fail 3x in nevada?

he wants to transfer his exam in california ... but i told him i don't think it's possible ... i told him that i think you need to wait for your nevada eligibility to expire before you can apply to a different state ... i hope i told him the right thing ...

as for me ... i took my nclex once in nevada august2006, but i failed ... now that im married and finally got the courage to take the exam again, this will be my 2nd try to take the nclex but this time im in california because i got married and moved here ... i just want to know how many times can i take the nclex ... do i need to take refrsher course?

and for my friend, can he transfer his state exam?

Each state is different. Some states will allow unlimited attempts where others allow 2/3 and then a review course. Ca will allow unlimited attempts at the exam. I would say your friend needs to check with the BON and maybe have another look on their website as there should be a statement

But can he transfer to a different state?

They can apply to another state but will have to start all over again. Pay application, send transcripts etc. They may ask if they have taken the exam before and the answer must be truthful

Can he apply to a different state even if his eligibility in Nevada is not yet expired?

Each state treats this situation as they see fit. In CA one can take the NCLEX for the rest of their life, whereas in another state, one must pass within four years of graduation, or they have to take a refresher course or go through the nursing program again or some other variation. Find out the rules for your state by inquiring with the Board of Registered Nursing. You can probably find this info on the website and won't even have to talk to anyone in person.
