If you had the opportunity to shadow a nurse on the floor to see what it's really like , before entering nursing school..would you have continued on with school or chosen a different profession?
I was an ER volunteer during nursing school. I didn't get to "shadow" (that part of the volunteer program was aimed at med students, not nursing students), but I saw quite a bit. Part of the reason I kept plugging along was because I wanted to deal with the action and insanity of the ER. If anything, my clinical experiences were disappointing. I made a lot of beds and washed a lot of butts, but I rarely placed foleys and never ran an IV pump.
I'm looking into getting my BSN so I can get out of LTC and into critical care, either an ER or an ICU. I miss the ER terribly.
When I started- I would have continued in nursing. The profession has grown since then but the health care crisis has left nursing in a much more difficult position than it was way back when I went to school. As things stand today, I can't imagine starting a nursing career under the massive mountain of regulation and scrutiny that nurses have to endure coupled with the crippling financial restraints that hospitals are under making nurses into a barely tollerated burden rather than a treasured asset.

I was a volunteer as a young person but still had no real idea what nursing was about. I don't know how to answer you.
But I do wish you all the best with this tough decision.
