I am looking for some information regarding why you, as a male nurse, choose to work pediatrics. I am a male nurse in pediatrics and want to gather information for a possible presentation on why men choose pediatrics and/or concerning recruiting men into pediatrics. If you could post or e-mail information about why choose pediatrics or maybe why you would not that would be helpful to me. Thank you.

Here's a thread I started a while back that might help you....

Personally I gravitated toward NICU/PICU/Peds because I enjoy working with that population, and the set of diagnoses that comes with it. Outside of NICU, I used to love the complex traumas that I cared for that would walk out the door a few months later. I love the lack of fatalism. Unlike adult ICU, you aren't thinking "let's hope he goes soon.... he's had a good life." It's fight to the end in peds. I also enjoy being a hero to kids and their parents. I love being able to fight for the helpless.....

I work with the adolescent pediatric population because I enjoy the youthful hope and exuberance to live life to the fullest. Consequently, most of the kids on my floor have "Stupid Human Tricks" kinds of injuries, but thats just the nature of the beast. Males working in peds is kinda shunned upon by society, but I dont care what people think about me. All that matters is that I give the best possible nursing care to my patients.

After my semester of nursing school I landed a job in the recovery room at a big children's hospital. The job was amazing, I learned a ton of info and the population grew on me. I spent 3 years there while in nursing school. After I graduated I spent 4 months as a graduate nurse on a different unit at the same hospital. I can't wait to pass boards this time around.

I am hoping to go into peds when I graduate nursing school (still have 2 years+ haven't applied yet). I am the 2nd oldest out of a family with 10 kids so I have 6 younger sisters and 2 yuonger brothers. It was amazing to grow up with so many siblings and I love working with kids. I think I would like to give peds a shot maybe in Kansas City at the children's hospital up there. The hospital I work at now has NO peds cases but I enjoy working with adults too:)

My facility does a lot of newborn/pedi work. I started out wanting to do ER. but I decided that due to the fact that (back then) our ER was 60% pedi, a year on the pedi floor first would be a good idea. I felt that the unit needed more people with a pedi background. (I worked as a tech there while going to school) The problem is-I love my current job. I still might decide to transfer to ER next summer, but giving up pedi is going to be hard.
I love my kids. I love the challenge of getting them to relax and be comfortable with me caring for them.
I have a lot of fun working with my kids. In my locker right now I have a red wig, a clown nose (actually several-I give them away to the kids), glow-in-the-dark bracelets (I work nights), crayons, etc. I probably spend 10x as much money on nail polish as my wife!
How many jobs pay as well as nursing, allow you to do something that is very helpful and meaningful, and allow you to play with the kids!
My mentor says that one reason I an a good pedi nurse is that I am just a overgrown kid at heart.
