when i graduate from nursing school and pass the NCLEX, and i am officially an RN, how do i go about getting the position i want. Is it easy to apply for an ER or OR job and get it, do i need to get expierence doing a job i dont really wanna do on a post op floor? Or can it be as easy as apply and get it?

Also Is it luck to get the position and or hours you want? By hours i mean work 3,12 hour shifts preferrably the night shift which i hear makes more, and also heard this is when you see cool stuff in the ER. Sorry, a lot of questions i know but I am eager to know. thanks

Specializes in NICU.

Most hospital jobs are three 12hr shifts and most new grads start on night shift, so that shouldn't be an issue. Getting the specialty that you want as a new grad will depend on your location and availability of jobs. If there is a surplus of RNs (both new grads and experienced) then you may need to take what you can get. If you are willing to relocate to another city or state, then apply to as many positions as possible. I applied to over 50 NICU positions nationwide before getting an offer from my current employer. When you start your last semester, start looking for "new grad residency" on indeed.com. Those hospitals have set training programs to get you up to speed in that specialty.

It's easy to "apply" for a job online. You just click, click, and upload/email your resume. The hard part is being chosen for an interview which you do have some control with. Nowadays it's all about person-to-person contact and networking. Meet the managers, directors, and recruiters of the place you want in person. Don't just email and call. Get your foot in the door by volunteering or working in the hospital (it doesn't necessarily have to be nursing related just as long as you make the effort to get to know people). Prior hospital/medical experience makes your resume stand out too. You need to sell yourself to the company you want to work for. There are hundreds, if not thousands of other people applying for that same position.

Just find a gig you like and apply for it. If HR likes your resume they'll call and setup an interview. It's all up to you after that.

Be persistent. Show up in clinical, always offering to help. Introduce yourself to the floor managers. Get their contact information.

I'm not a nurse yet but I have been trying to get an ER Tech job at a trauma center near by. Ive learned that to get the job you want, you have to either know someone or apply from within.

I had the same opinion. Anyway, more attempts - more chances. Do not stop after first fail.
