Male nursing student, Canada, Wondering about Correctional Nursing.

Published

Hello, I am new to these boards and was wondering about correctional nursing.

I am 28 years old (going for 29), used to take plumbing and then re-schooled to enroll in the BscN program in Canada.

For fourth year (I am finishing up second) we have the opportunity to perform in correctional nursing as one of the many options. I like public health, corrections, mental health looks interesting and I am undecided.

My reasoning for getting into corrections is because of money, drama, being a male nurse and being able to support a family.

Corrections to me offers:

-A Stable job working with the federal government

-More freedom and responsibility for patients

-Less drama (this is associated with the nurses who are angry because of other nurses trying to get them fired and the *politics* associated with nursing)

-As well females want to work with pediatrics, in labour and delivery units, ICU, OR and many of them want to avoid correctional work (so the job is there)

-I read that the pay can be 1200-1500$/week

-I would get a pension

-I would get benefits provided to me (free money)

-Not many resumes are given out for corrections nursing (you have a 50/50 chance of getting in)

-As a male we are rare, I believe 8% of the nursing profession is male.

In my program there has to be 200+ females and *maybe* 20-25 guys

I want to hear what it is like for correctional nurses. Female and male nurse opinions are perfect because I would love to hear from both.

I would like to hear a male who is involved with corrections (simply because guys can relate more to guys) Especially in nursing (no offence).

Top questions I must ask:

-What are the hours like?

-What is a work day like?

-What other staff do you work with?

-Is it a good profession to manage while having a small family?

Correctional nursing is a fantastic field. I miss prison nursing. There is a lot of autonomy, and you have to draw from a wide knowledge base.

I'm puzzled by your comments about drama, though. There is no more or less drama at a prison medical unit than in a hospital. I don't understand your comments and focus on being a nurse who is male. If you are interested in correctional nursing go for it. I'd just follow your interest.

Good luck with 29 :)

The reason I brought the drama comment up was that I've been told by male nurses to keep my head down low and from female nurses that they don't like the politics on the floor.

I have 4 sisters myself and want to be happy with my profession. Meanwhile the colleagues are miserable.
