Male Nurses Discrimination

Nurses General Nursing

I'm new to the forums and have read a few threads that seem to indicate that male nurses are openly discriminated against. Is this true? Does anyone have first hand expierence with this? I'm just curious because I have gone back to school to get a BSN for my 2nd career choice.

I'm not trying to start a flame war, just curious if this is true to any extent.

To make a long story short, the answer is no.

I would not say that I have been discriminated against but, treat differant. In school I have had perfessors tell me that men should not be nurses and I have had them say thing God there are men in this profession now. Some of the older people ( Pt., Teachers whatever ) seem to have a harder time excepting male nurses.

I can only speak from the student perspective, but around here men are becoming common. Our local ADN program is 20% male grads now, and that will increase because I see it now in the prereqs. From what I can see they are welcomed.
