Male Nurse?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I am considering a career in healthcare and nursing is top on the list. I hope to gain more insight about the industry (been doing lots of reading). I have noticed that about 1 in 20 are male nurses. That seems low, although more and more are becoming nurses.

If you are working in the field now, I am interested in hearing about male nurses (stereotyping, views, opinions about, etc). How are they viewed in the industry by their peers and colleages?

Also, any other advice is helpful, including what to say during an interview to help the acceptance process, etc.

Thanks!

Dave

Hi - I'm a male going into nursing also. If you looking for advice from other men in nursing, they have a specific forum just for that. There are already a lot of posts about experiences, stereotyping, and opinions listed there.

Here is the link.

Wow! Thanks for the link. I am not really afraid of it, because I know there are a need for male nurses too, and it is just a profession. However, I am sure that the former dominating profession of nursing still has stereotyping, etc. It seems that nurses are more viewed as fellow colleages of doctors, at least that is what I have heard and read.

Specializes in Maternity, quality.

Not sure if this gives you any sort of encouragement, but more than 25% of my class is male. I know that this is a larger percentage than previous classes of my program, but I, for one, am happy to see it. As a female I enjoy having them in my class. Three of the guys are in my clinical group and I haven't seen or heard anything negative there (I've also noticed a fair number of male nurses working on the floor, so it's not unusual for that facility). Obviously I'm not a guy, so I can't speak directly about what they may have faced, but I haven't heard any of them say anything negative about their experience.

More power to male nurses!!!! I am an older female and have endured a couple of serious "older people" operations, you know the stuff that starts creeping up on you when you hit 40. Let me tell you that the BEST nurses I had were men ;) I even had a male midwife when I had my youngest son 9 years ago, he (the midwife) was AWESOME! Good luck and all the best to you.

Good Luck!!!

I have to agree with the above poster - I have had several surgeries in the past couple of years and some of the best nurses were male nurses.

Good luck in your journey!

I used to date a male nurse, and it's part of how I began to find out about the field and become interested in it. He loved what he does, and inspired me once upon a time to begin learning about the profession. I actually heard that last summer he married another nurse from the same hospital.
