We're short hair (off the collar), neat facial hair is ok. As for tattoos, there has been a policy change this year, as long as it is in good taste they do not need to be covered. Previosly, all tattoos had to be covered and since long sleeves and turtle necks are not allowed students looked like "walking wounded" with bandaids and dressings covering their necks and arms.

In my clinicals last sem., I was working in the recovery and one of the pts ask if I was jerry garcia. long hair on a guy is all right if you keep it clean and it doesnt interfere with pt care.

Im hoping that with being wonderful in every other aspect that perhaps the tat could be overlooked.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sure, I have worked with guys who have tats and they were excellent nurses. I never heard a complaint about it from anyone.

Im a second semster nursing student with hair half way down my back, and as long as i roll it up in a tight semikind of bun nobody complains.

Same here ... except I have been nursing (mumble) years and I am in Psychiatry.

Keep it neat and tidy.

If females are allowed to wear tied back hair on / in your hospital / school, then you can too. Other wise it is sex discrimination.

Im so upset! I want to get a design shaved into my head..... but obv I cant because of nursing school.... Blah!!! My first semester is exhausting, and yea yea... it will guess worst I know!!

Well I have my hair spiked and shaved down both sides (with the spikes going from from to back). Its not an 'extreme' style at all.. The only thing they ask in my university (and most in the UK) is it be clean, tidy and presentable.

I had a mohawk for a few months after I got out of the Army, but shaved it when i applied to the Nursing Program. One thing I thought was a bit weird, none of my tats are visable in short sleeves, but I was still asked to submit pictures of them. I have an Airborne tat on my upper left arm (a skull wearing a maroon beret superimposed on jumpwings with the words 82nd Airborne underneath). Yeah...I know. But I was 18 and excited about being a paratrooper. Anyway, my advisor, for some reason, thought it was a rascist thing and told me she was deeply offended. I had to go get the VA Benefits Rep to come down and vouch for it being an Army tattoo.

My school was very up front in the student handbook:

*Hair (for men) short and neat.

*Facial hair (for men) is okay as long as it's neatly trimmed....no restrictions on facial hair for women...LOL (J/K)

*Only 1 pair of post/stud earrings.

*Tattoos must be covered during clinicals.

*Good hygiene, deodorant required, no cologne/perfume.

I buzz my hair with no guard all over (going bald anyway, darn it), and trim the beard with a #4 guard. All my tattoos are covered except I have one big bear claw on my left bicep that sometimes peeks out about a half inch depending on how the scrub tops are cut.

Just play by the rules until you graduate....there'll be time for individual expression once you're working, although you may have to look for an employer that realizes these things have absolutely NO bearing on how good of a nurse you are.

Guys i just wanna know if its allowed to have a bald shaved head for nurses?

I think im losing some hair and i have read that shaving ur head bald is the best way to go..

Yes, it's allowed.

I had dreadlocks for the 1st half of nursing school, I kept them tied back but I got a lot of BS about it from clinical instructors. They never came out and said 'cut your hair' but all my actions were certainly more scrutinized than any of my fellow classmates. I eventually got sick of it and shaved my head.

Never gotten any grief about cutting my hair down without the guard and the blade set back (going bald also). However I have heard my female counterparts being chastised for not controlling their hair.
