Malcolm X -City Colleges of Chicago School of Nursing Fall 2023

Published

Hey everyone, just starting a topic for people to discuss City Colleges of Chicago Nursing application process for fall 2023. I've had all my documents marked as complete for weeks now, status on my application just updated to "viable candidate". Anyone else hear anything? They haven't had very many info sessions this semester. Anyone know why?

Okay thank you for the clarification. I'm not sure why I wasn't given the same opportunity to explain my GPA seems a little unfair if other students were able to write this letter. Thanks for you help and congrationlations to you

Thank you. Please don't get discouraged. The good thing is that you can apply each semester since they admit students each semester. Please don't let this get you down. And you can also use one more semester to improve your GPA while waiting for a decision for the next application round.

I was accepted in the first round (high GPA high TEAS) but I absolutely agree with you. I don't think the process was well executed at all and I'm left wondering honestly why I busted my *** so hard for such high grades if the GPA ended up being irrelevant anyway for some. I think if you have valid documentation, like there's a person up the thread who says they fell seriously ill and that's why their GPA was low. But outside of that,  why are some with low GPAs being allowed to write letters to explain it, when others aren't? Either lower the GPA requirements to make it fair or don't do it at all.

Yes this is true because I would want to really feel like I deserved it due to working hard to get accepted. But I think it's because they don't always get enough qualified applicants that always meet both requirements for TEAS and GPA to fill all the seats.

But I think it's because they don't always get enough qualified applicants that always meet both require btw for TEAS and GPA to fill all the seats. I also think it depends on other circumstances on who gets to write the letter. Like my situation was that I am retaking some science classes for the second time so they're probably seeing that on my record. And other circumstances. Because I also applied before and was close to being accepted before I became ill.

My cumulative GPA was low due to getting low grades when I was younger. My GPA that is based off of the classes I've taken since going back to school is well over the program requirement. So yes, there are probably many reasons people write concession letters in order to explain their low cumulative GPA.

This is also another reason for me. My GPA at a university I started at was low while also in a different major before I decided to go with Nursing. But once I got into city colleges and focused on nursing pre reqs I improved my grades and GPA. My GPA for City Colleges meets requirements but since they calculate GPA from transcripts from outside colleges, my GPA ended up below requirements. I explained this in my letter as well as the fact that I fell I'll during the end of my pre reqs.

@polyglotpielegniarka same here. I'm currently sitting on the presidents list and worked very hard to get there. I thought all of that mattered; that this was an elite program. However, it seems like they pick based off the ability to fill the spots.

It's still an elite program. I know a few people that was in the program and some people who are in it now. The program itself is elite and competitive. There are some people who cannot even finish the program because they can't handle it. You will find out the truth once you actually start and see for yourself how many people you will end up graduating with at the end.

Not every student is able to take 3 or 4 classes (full time student) . Some student may have to take 1 or 2 classes (part time student). While a student is completing their last prerequisite's classes they are allowed to apply . This could also be reason why a student GPA my not meet the requirements at that particular time. Let's remember MXC let there's student apply to programs with pending classes. Every student have different situation going on so that is why the nursing committee give students a chance to explain their circumstance. This is my assumption. Every student situation is different from the next.

I'm glad I'm not alone in my feelings here.

By national average it's above average, but not ELITE.

However the point isn't the school- it's the ability to pass the NCLEX and retain your education.
