what makes you stand out ? why should we pick you?

Published

Ok so I ve been on a handful of interviews and this is a very common question I get. I had one nurse manager ask several times this question in different ways like why should we hire you? What makes you stand out above the other applicants? How will you go over and beyond as a nurse? Need some advice on some simple but good answers that I could say. Its ao easy to throw out a million adjectives to describe yourself anyone can say the same words- hard worker compassionate dedicated over achiever advocate for my patients etc. I feel it gets so repetitive sometimes.

Read the job description.

Pick 3 requirements where you would excel.

Piece of cake.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Precepting, Education.

Did you do well and get above average grades while in nursing school? State that your dedication to your studies reflects how you will dedicate your time and energy to your job. Explain to them that you enjoyed learning and look forward to doing it throughout the rest of your career. Were you involved in extra activities such as a student nursing organization, health fairs, etc? State that you go above and beyond the expected duties and you will implement that enthusiasm in to your work ethic. If you have no other healthcare/job experience that is relative to the interview give examples of how you were unique and stood out from the crowd in school.

It may seem like a difficult question that deserves a fancy answer but you do not need to come up with some super amazing example to make a solid impression (like how you single handedly delivered a baby on your way to your adult health final and then got the highest score on the test). If you're able to give a few honest examples and how they can relate to your potential position those are just as impressive. Good luck!

#1 rule I have found effective is ENTHUSIASM!! Go above your normal level of enthusiasm ( unless you are naturally gregarious) at the interview. Tell them about the PASSION for COMPASSION that you have, your integrity, commitment to the highest level of quality care, etc. They like to hear people that are going to LOVE the chance to get the job, not just feel ho-hum about it.
