Major Change. Need advice!

Published

I havent been able to get into any nursing programs and im running out of time and money. I know i should continue to pursue my dream but i cant keep waiting year after year of being denied and not doing anything to further my education. I think i should change my major but im not 100% sure about what to do. I know for a fact that i want to stay in the medical field. People have directed me towards cytotechnology, microbiology and clinical labratory scientist and all of those interest me but im a little hesitant because the Gen. Ed for those majors are very concentrated on chemistry and difficult mathematics. Which arent my strongest points. I have completed all of my nursing prereqs and was hoping to go for a major that had prereqs that over lapped with the nursing ones. Does anyone know of any other majors that are in the Medical Field that have the same pre reqs as nursing and not so many extra prereqs on top of that. Id love to hear any other suggestions and if any of you know people in these medical professions how do they say it is, do they enjoy it, etc. Thank you!

Most people on this site are actually nurses or interested in becoming nurses. If you want the requirements for other majors, you might have to do the groundwork yourself. People taking alternate paths are not likely to be around.

Some nursing schools select some applicants by a lottery system. You'd still have to meet their minimum requirements and get lucky, though. Maybe that's something you could look around for? You could also check out requirements for LVN programs in your area. If you get lucky, you may be able to become an LVN and bridge to RN soon after.

I worked through nursing school as a CNA to offset the costs and later transitioned to the LPN program as there was a long wait list for the RN program.

Yea im currently in a CNA program and from the responses ive been getting about going the LPN/LVN route seems a lot better to me. Did you do your LPN at a community college or vocational school?

Technical college. Same for my RN but I think I got bumped up for the LPN to RN bridge because I graduated from same college.

At my college, dental hygienist had the exact same pre reqs as nursing.
