Maintaining knowledge & Skills

Published

We all know that the economy right now is tough and, in effect, lengthening the time between graduation and job acquisition for new graduate nurses.

For those of you in this situation, how are you staying current with your skills and knowledge? Do any of you break out the old textbooks (& if so, how often....on a schedule)? What about volunteering, joining an organization, etc.? Any unique approaches?

I'm curious to see what others are up to.

Thanks for sharing!

Specializes in Telemetry.

Presently, I am going over my skills...it is good to keep up.

I am an "old" new grad. I graduated in 2003. Passed NCLEX in March. I have applied to Samuel Merritt refresher program. I was just told of a summer skills lab at San Jose State University. Trying to get more information on that. I also am working as a CNA so that I can at least get information and tips from veteran nurses.

Specializes in NICU.

I peruse textbooks occasionally. I talk 'nurse' with my Mom a lot too, and she sends me all of her journals. Volunteering isn't really an option for me, since I have a 2 year old and we can't afford to put her in daycare if I'm not working.

As I stated earlier, I found out about a Post-Graduate Clinical Transition and Professional Socialization Program through San Jose State. Those new grads or anyone who graduated after May 2008 you can go to http://rntransition.wionline.org.

Hurry applications need to be in by May 15th.

Good Luck All!
