main responsibilities of a floor nurse

What are the main duties of a floor nurse vs a specialist nurse.

How many of you liked floor nursing?

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

What do you mean by specialist?

When I worked on the floor I would be responsible for pt assessments, medication administration, performing any tasks that need done (ie. Foley placement, NG tube placement), coordinating care, providing pt and family education, colaborating with other disciplines (ie physical therapy, pharmacy), and documentation.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Academics.

Floor nursing is a specialty, and the specialty is based on the types of patients on that floor: medical, surgical, telemetry, rehab, in-facility SNF. Med/surg is usually combined as a specialty, but as a float who works both, medical and surgical should be separate specialties, IMO.

When someone asks me what kind of nurse I am, I usually say cardiovascular/pulmonary because most of my hours of work are spent on telemetry. Saying "tele" doesn't mean anything to most lay people.

Most days I love floor nursing, but, then again, I don't have anything to compare it with.

I'm not sure what you mean by "floor nurse"....are you referring to Medical-Surgical Nursing? That *is* a specialty. It is a different specialty than ICU or OR or ER or peds or outpatient or ...etc etc etc.
