I keep seeing references to this, but I can't figure out what it is. Somebody? Anybody?

Hi,
The hospital I work at is moving towards Magnet status. They call it nursing at a higher level. I don't know all the specifics, but it has to do mostly with nursing. For example, a magnet hospital has a RN for every patient (no lpns or lpn is with an RN on a team). There are very few if any CNA's on the floor. The patient to nurse ratio is low. Like maybe 4-6 pts per RN. There are other criteria. Maybe someone is more knowlegeable in this area can answer.

I guess I'm being dense. Isn't this what all hospitals should be promoting? The absolute best in pt care?

I work for a magnet hospital. I don't know much about it but I can tell you a few things. Every patients care is overseen by an RN. There are lots of LPNs on staff but they have an RN to sign off on the dr orders. There are few CNAs but lots of PCTs. As far as staffing, on my floor its max 5 without a tech, max 8 with a tech.

This is the second facility I've worked at in nearly 20 years. Both are set up this way, except there are CNA's and no PCT's. Neither facility is designated as a magnet hospital.

In a magnet hospital nurses are also involved with what is called performance improvement or pi...it is nursing based...not md or admin...for example restraint committee, falls committee, open heart committee...review data from charts and see what is working, what needs to be improved and how to improve and involve all staff.
