OK, so I've learned slowly but surely that my boss is the queen of dishonesty. Masking it all in sweet talk.
Have you ever met this type of person? Someone who can twist things around to make herself look great, and in the meanwhile have enough power over those that know better for them not to say anything? I do, and I'm about over it.
I told her a couple of months ago I wanted to transfer to L&D from a GYN unit. I asked her how to go about this, and she said she knew it wouldn't be a problem (I'm charge on days and know the managers in Women's well). She said she'd put in a good word for me w/L&D NM and let me know. I waited a bit and after asking a couple of times if she spoke w/her, she came to me one day and said she had. She gave me a repeat of the entire conversation, and it was positive.
So today since I hadn't heard anything from the L&D NM, I took her aside and asked if my NM had said anything to her about me transferring. She was completely shocked, and (to my pleasant surprise) very excited! All I could think of was that this was not the "fake surprised" reaction. She seemed really happy and very taken aback. Which leads me to believe that my manager completely made up her side of things. I wouldn't doubt it, knowing all the other things she's made up. But I'm naive and young, and thought that we should trust each other, with me working so closely with her and really being her b(*&ch for a lot of things.
This experience has definitely turned me against management for many reasons. I say that meaning a career for myself, not against management in general.
So what have you guys experienced? I'd love to hear stories and think I'm not alone!
I have been thinking about this post. I will tell you why I think SOME managers behave so badly. It is really quite simple. You see, they only care what their bosses think of them. Their bosses only care if they come in under budget. Things like happy staff with low turn over do not factor in to equation. To have a change in culture it has to come down from the very top. The only thing the very top cares about is $$$. I do think there is a change in the wind and some places are really starting to focus on retention cultures. However, it will be a while before the majority of hospitals join in if ever happens.
Thanks all you guys for your responses. Unfortunately (I guess is the best word I can think of), it does make me feel better. I agree with the last poster about the NMs having to/wanting to please their boss(es). I know mine does. Her claim to fame for the first couple of years I was there was that she turned around the unit and our customer satisfaction rating was so high. It's now at it's lowest since I've worked there, and we've had a 25% turnover (we only have about 20 FTEs) in the last few months. She will ask us if there's anything she can do, and no one says much. No one says what they really think, of course. But in staff satisfaction surveys, she scores very low. And she tries to put it on those of us in charge, saying we aren't doing this or that, when she let someone with 72 attendance occurances to work until that point when she finally fired her. 72 in one year? That's crazy. So I'm not the only unhappy person. Things are good when they're good, no one notices. Get into a crunch and it goes to s(*&!
I appreciate you all letting me vent!

Im not a nurse yet so i can't tell you about nursing conditions from personal experiences, but our area is beautiful up here in the pacific northwest, and there are affordable areas outside of seattle and portland. wages are decent and my friends who are nurses seem happy with there jobs. Maybe its time for another move! :)
