I find myself getting more and more frustrated with trying to become an RN with every class I take. I have a very bad GPA from previous college courses (more than 5 years ago) before I became a nurse. I went to trade school to become an LVN back then because my GPA prevented me from going to community college. I figured once I worked for a few years and went back to school it wouldn't matter so much anymore..well, apparently it still does. I have since retaken most of the courses I failed, taken all my pre-reqs and done pretty well in them, but it's not enough to get me past the cut-off for the points that are in every program in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area. I always seem to fall a little short. It's very frustrating and upsetting. I'm at the point I don't care WHERE in Texas I go!! Please if anyone knows of ANY program in Texas that doesn't have such high barriers to entry for a transition student...I am thinking about going to another for-profit school but I would rather not go that route again because I hate to think about putting myself in even more debt Please help!

Hi phalanx! I don't know if I can help but I see no one has answered your post in the 20 or so days you've been on AllNurses.
I'm in South Texas and feel your pain. I've fallen short also. Off the top of my head, I would suggest making a list of what's important to you, and compare pros and cons (e.g.. cost of living, transportation, housing options [can you stay with a relative]etc....you already know all this). Western Governor's University has a Texas branch including RN education, there is a cohort even in my area.
Perhaps some of the more remote, less hip-n-cool areas of Texas might be less competitive? Or perhaps, your "calling" may be to remain an LVN, take short courses to advance your skills, and help people in other ways? Don't know if any of this helps, but I'd like to wish you good luck in whatever you undertake!

I have a 4.0 and still having issues getting into a Dallas/Ft.worth area school. I enrolled in Excelsior in June and I am 3/4 finished. Good luck!

I know you probably do not want to put yourself in more debt, but WCU-Dallas has a great LVN-BSN program and there are several people in the program now and in some of my classes.

i am considering DNI and Platt at this time (though I don't really want to move to OK...). WCU would cost me like $90,000--even if I was willing to do that nobody would give me the loans. I am willing to move anywhere in Texas if it would guarantee me admission to a program at a CC. i am considering EC but I have wanted to live in CA so that could be a problem down the line...
Tarleton University in the Waco area. Please don't quote me on that. They have a state of the art nursing program. Not for profit as well. Yes, EC would be challenged in CA.
I'm looking into the program at Tarleton now, thank you. I also have applied to NCTC because although I am below the cutoff for traditional applicants, the cutoff for bridge students is lower, and I am a whole point above that cutoff. So...we'll see? I know if they give me a chance to take the Kaplan I'll probably be okay because I tend to do well on standardized tests. In fact it looks like I won't have to take the TEAS for Tarleton because of my SAT score
