LVN returning to nursing

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hi everyone

I recently signed up for an LVN refresher course after being home full time with my kids for 10 years. My question to anyone who can help is the following. Where should I try applying for work once I am finished with the refresher class? I'm really excited to jump back into the nursing field but also a little nervous, okay a lot nervous! Just hoping someone can give me some advice. Thanks in advance! :)

Well, where did you work before you had kids? LTC? Clinic? Hospital? I guess it all depends on the type of patient you are wanting to be working with and type of facility. LTC is always hiring, atleast out here in AZ. I would guess in most places as well. The nice thing is you can just work 3 days a week.

I am an actively working LPN, but was always curious about refresher courses, in case I wanted to take a break from nursing. They seem hard to find in my side of the planet. Where are you taking yours, where did you find it, and how long is it? Sometimes, I have wanted to take a portion of it, such as tube feedings, dressings and IV care, because I have been working in a clinic since becoming an LPN and if I needed to ever work the bedside, I would like to review such skills.

To answer your question, though, I would also say that I would try and start in a place similar to the last facility you worked for. Good luck and welcome back to the field!

I'm in Southern California and believe me, finding this class was no easy feat! I called hospitals, community colleges and vocational schools with hardly any results. There were online options but I felt that I needed a classroom setting with an instructor to really learn. The course consists of nine sessions each 8 hrs long for a total of 72 hrs. The downside is that there is no clinical component, which I really wanted. I start in a week, wish me luck!

I am happy you were lucky enough to find one at all. I'd like one with a clinical componenet, just to review certain skills since I am primarily a clinic nurse. Good luck!

The College that I attended runs return to nursing courses. They also offer modules for refreshing skills that are not forgotten but not used often.

I was hoping to find something like this in my local community college BUT had no luck
