LVN to B.A. in Gerontology?

Published

I am wondering what kind of job is waiting for me if I take a degree in Gerontology with my LVN license. I don't plan to pursue my RN. I had so much trouble taking my nclex-pn; I have taken it several times and I don't want to deal again with frustration and depression:( for another nclex- RN. Besides, I like working with geriatrics:). My family pressures me to become an RN but I don't have the brain to become a BSN-RN. Maybe at least a BA in Gerontology with my LVN license could satisfy them to call me a nurse. Is Major in Gerontology a right choice? HELP!

Personally, I do not see the usefulness unless you are doing it for personal satisfaction or, the one option that I see, as a background to obtain licensing as a long term care facility administrator. I would look into that venue if running a nursing home appeals to you.

First, your family ought to call you a nurse now since you are a licensed vocational NURSE.

Second, if you "had the brain" to become a LVN than it goes without saying you "have the brain" to become a RN if you want.

Third, if you *do* want to go on

for your RN, you don't have to do a BSN program unless you want to. ADN grads take the same NCLEX as BSN grads.

Finally, I don't see a BA in gerontology doing much for you as a LPN. I'm sure you would learn much that might make you a better nurse, but it wouldn't help your career much. Education is wonderful, of course, but can you justify the expense when it won't help you make more money?

I would think you would still have the same opportunities that you have now with your LVN license now. Where is it that you would like to work? I don't think it will hurt you at all to do it if it's something you really want to do, but I don't think it will really help get you a job that you couldn't already get now with your LVN. Don't let your family pressure you into anything, you have to live your own life. Would having your RN-BSN open doors for you for job opportunities? YES, but if that's not what you want to do then don't do it.

Good luck!!

Thank you so much everyone for all of your advise and encouraging comments. Sorry it took me so long to comment back, I was just busy searching and reading several articles about gerontology major. And I think I'll just take Gerontology major. I was searching online for Gerontology major jobs and found that I can be an LTC or Health Care Administrator with my LVN and state administrator license. Most job list prefer to have LVN or RN license to become HCA. And I think most BSN-RN leads to HCA?(correct me if I'm wrong). So why take another NCLEX-RN again, if Gerontology major can also lead me to become an administrator? I like making difference with people's lives but patient contact is just not for me. I am also interested in Counseling and maybe Social Work and I think these kind of job don't need any state licensing.

Thank you so much Caliotter3, BrandonLPN, and Sheryl18:)

Sorry, I feel like I posted in the wrong website.

You didn't post in the wrong website, unless there is one out there where you could have received more responses. All kinds of people post here and they don't necessarily post about topics that are directly related to nursing, or even health care. I've met facility administrators who possessed RN licenses, and when I came across information about the licensing, it did not set a 'requirement' for one level of education over another, so I would think you could do this with an LVN license. Good luck.
