Get there at least 10 minutes early to get a feel for your day.
Narcotic count and report
Report c CNA's (write their names and room #'s in your notebook)
Any immediate insulin coverages
Take your MAR and TAR and sit down
Flag your treatments and your odd time meds and insulins
Check for new orders in your pts charts
Check your cart and restock as needed
Eat a banana and go pee
Start your med pass ASAP
Meds to the early risers and the walkie/talkies first, peg's last
Leave the call lights to the CNA's (no time during med pass)
Take notes while on your med pass so you don't forget everything you see and hear during the med pass...
Aftr med pass, you can relax a bit and sit down to do charting, calls to MD, TO's, calls to family, calls to pharm, etc until time for blood sugars, treatments and mid-day meds
Good luck!
I wish someone has told ME this when I first started!
thank you very much for the information. i have been unable to reply due to job employment and as it turns out, i have two places that i have been orienting in. i do however have a problem. at both facilities, i have been shadowing nurses who have been considered to be "very good" by their facilities and thier bosses. what troubles me however is the fact that they tend to give certain patients 9pm meds with thier earlier 5pm meds (so meds to be given at about 5 are given at 4ish instead). is this a normal practice??? mixing medications that are to be given at different times troubles me greatly. i just dont feel comfortable knowingly doing medication errors even though it gets the job done alot quicker. i dont mean to ramble on but it is not what i thought it would be. cn anyone please advise if they have been in this position or if they have anything to say. thanks in advance
