LTC transition to hospital

Published

Hi guys !!

I have been a Rn for almost 7 months, after a failure in L&D and quitting that job , i got an offer at a rehab/ltc hospital, which i accepted and will start next month, many hospital interviews that i had at hospitals for all departments there is tell me that i don't have enough experience and that they dont want to spend all this money and time with me because it might not work out.

my question is do you think rehab/ltc experience can give me the opportunity to find a RN med/ surge job after 1 year?

I think you should take the job for both experience and to support your livelihood. Who knows, you may end up loving it...the acute care hospital is not the be all end all. Get experience first then evaluate if you truly want to change specialties.

What do you mean by "rehab/ltc hospital"? Is it an acute care hospital that has a rehab/LTC unit?

The reason I ask is because you definitely do not want to make the mistake of accepting a job at a long term acute care hospital (LTACH)....not with 7 months of experience. I've seen an LTACH bring nurses with 10 years of experience to tears after realizing it was not the same as LTC.

If it is just rehab/long term care, yes, you need the experience of at least a year. But if it's an LTACH, this is no place for a new nurse. I had over 20 years of experience, with a solid 11 med-surg years when I got a job at an LTACH. And when I tell you that some experienced ICU agency nurses making $50/hr+ would not come back, believe me when I tell you that you won't stand a chance.

I am NOT shamed to say I didn't last 6 months even as a full time regular employee there. I think it was more like 3 months on my second attempt in this area of nursing, and that's stretching it.

Double check to make sure.

Thank you! I was just feeling a bit down because no hospital would give a shot... but i managed to get a job at a hospital at med/oncology, but i am looking forward to working in both settings :p

Yes , it is a rehab hospital more like ltc, patients with strokes, mystenia gravis,

Alzheimer, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injuries etc... not a LTACH
