That was my cure too, Blackcat........getting out of LTC altogether and going someplace else.
It's too bad LTC sucks the very lifeblood from the nurses and aides who go into it with the best of intentions. I love the geriatric population, and I'd ten times rather work with them than younger adults and teenagers who are often a huge pain in the kazoo. But as long as corporate politics and unbridled greed rule the industry, I don't see it changing any, and until it does I will never go back.
That's great cat. I really need to PM you for some advice. This LTC is sucking the life out of me. What a thankless job
Dear Todd
The only advice I can give for LTC is run for your life before you become suicidal. I was getting more and more depressed everyday. LTC is a no win situation. Please look for a new job.
I don't mean to be smart...but not ALL LTC is like that. There are still some great facilities! I know of several in just a thirty mile radius of my home. :) Hate to sound like Pollyanna, but it's not always depressing or sucking the life out of nurses, it can bring great joy if you work where residents and staff are valued and cared about!

I've worked in about 25 different LTC's and I must admit that one of them was
first class. Unfortunately, that one good LTC had business problems and closed down. It seems that a good LTC is very hard to find. Glad to hear that there are some good ones.
I understand, as I have worked "those places" as well! But my advice, if you love geriatrics, is not to "run" and there are other options, if you stay, other than becoming "suicidal"! Find a good place....they are out there! I know that most aren't, but don't paint them all with one brush either.
