yes- the demented elderly can be quite entertaining

I looked up from the nursing station to see a sweet sight.

An elderly woman was wiping sausage gravy off the face of an elderly man.

On closer observation, however, I noticed that she was wiping his face with a buttered piece of bread.

Keep them comming, :rotfl: I love hearing these stories !

I used to work LTC, and had quite a dew demented pts. As anyone who has actually worked with this population knows, it is sometimes best to go along with their version of reality, rather than confuse them further with the facts.

I worked nocs. One elderly demented man would hear me going up and down the hall doing my med pass, and would say things like "Honey, what are you doing? Hurry up and come to bed."

When I would tell him that I was the nurse, doing my med pass. He would sometimes get agitated. So, I came up with a response that served to calm and reassure him.

I started responding with "I'm just washing up, Dear. I'll be in in a few minutes."

He would then say something like- "Well, hurry up. It's time to go to sleep!" or "Well, get a move on. I'm waiting for you."

He would more often than not, roll over and go to sleep himself.

When I worked in LTC as a CNA, the facility always decorated the dining room tables at Easter with a little basket and three dyed eggs. It looked so festive. One year we were having a difficult time finding one of the residents. Yup, there he was, systematically going to each table, sitting down, peeling each egg and downing them all. He had eaten about 3/4 of the eggs by the time he was found. I was very greatful that he was not on my assignment that day and the next. Imagine what happens when one eats eggs that have been at room temperature for several days!

While I was working there we had one terrible scare one day. One of the residents who was confused, was missing. It was in the fall and quite cool. She was missing during day shift, and the hunt was continuing during the afternoon shift. Since the doors were very heavy to open, and there was quite a few staff during the day, the doors were not alarmed during the day.

Several of the CNA's even went into the woods around the facility, calling for her. No luck. They finally called in every resource they had in the staff. Finally, the maintenance man found the lady. She somehow had forced the door open to the furnace room and it shut on her. She had been pacing a 36" circle for hours. She sure was happy to get out, and get some food! There were some changes after that.

One of the residents had CP and was the sweetest little lady. My mom, who also was a CNA, would joke around with her. While getting her dressed in the morning, my mom said, "Oh, my mouth tastes like sh***t." "How do YOU know what sh***t tastes like?" she said with a knowing smile. :)

there was a line forming outside the central bath. a group of women were being bathed. a very demanding elderly gentleman was upset that he had to wait until a group of men were ready to be showered. he responded, "it is just a darn old carwash. that is what it is. we are on some kind of an assembly line headed into an old carwash." :chuckle

i had to run into the utility room to laugh. i knew if he saw me laughing he would get agitated.

Does anyone here remeber an email forward that went around a few years ago? It was called "Top 12 games to play in the nursing home." It was a riot. I did a search, but couldn't find it.

I remember one of the games on the list was:

20 Questions (shouted into your good ear).

That one really cracked me up.
