ADON position

Specialties LTC Directors

Published

I just interviewed for an ADON position. I have been a charge nurse in LTC for many years, and a unit manager this year. This is a small facility and I got a very nice vibe. Any suggestions, thoughts, etc. on being a new ADON are appreciated. Thank you!

Specializes in retired LTC.

Depending on how small a facility it is, you may be wearing multiple hats. So it would be to your advantage to know about all the 'extra' responsibilities you might carry.

Will you have to cover the floor for callouts? This is a biggie.

Will you be salary or 'on the clock'? If salary, you might be there more than 40 hours, so how will that be compensated?

Any weekend 'administrator on duty' responsibilities?

And are the other department heads in place or are they vacant?

Are there other nursing supervisors (esp MDS/RNAC)?

When are they due for next survey and how have they been doing so far?

Since you've been a UM, you've probably had some experience with these areas. Just nice to know, esp if you're doing the 'multiple hats thing'.

Specializes in Gerontology, Med surg, Home Health.

The Assistant Director position varies greatly from one facility to the next. Get a job description and a clear picture of expectations before you take the position. I've been an ADON in 2 buildings and my job was quite different. Do you know the DON...it makes it very difficult if you and the DON don't come from the same place so to speak....good luck....
