LTC consulting

The ADON and I have been in our facility for over 15 years. During lunch conversation we were just talking and came up with maybe starting out on our own w/ a consulting business. Teach CNA class, QMA class (both of which we are already certified to do in this state), CPR re-certs, TB certification, maybe some MDS & careplanning inservice/consulting.

What do you think? Would you use this kind of service in your area, or is this all a coorporate mandated thing as to which consulting company you use?

Got any other ideas of what we could do for additional services?

Hi, I started my own LTC nurse consulting a year ago. You have alot of services that would be valuable to nursing homes. Most of the larger companies have their own consultants. However, there's a need in the moderate size companies and privately owned nursing homes.

I consult for a company that has 5 nursing homes.

MDS can be a good area to consult. Also auditing of departments can be another service.

I was a DON and former state surveyor so i deal with alot of the regulations.

The more you know about the regulations the better. You can purchase the long term care regulation book at any college bookstore that has nursing classes.

I started by writing a letter outlining my services and sent it to this nursing home company. Luckily he was needing someone.

You'll need to market your services and hopefully find some homes.

I was very lucky and work as much as I like, part-time.

Are you kidding? This is an excellent idea. You might want to also consider teaching:

1) Strategies for the patient with dementia,etc. 2) Smoking cessation.

I wish there were more nursing entrepreneurs in this area. Otherwise other specialists who are not nurses tend to "take on" these roles.
