LPN Wants a Student Nurse Position in Hospital

Hello,

I'm a LPN going into my last semester of RN school in the fall. I would love to apply and get a student nurse position in a hospital. I have applied online and haven't received an answer. I'm wondering if it's possibly due to me having a nursing license and maybe there is some kind of liability issue. I will have a job when I graduate in LTC however I was thinking how great it would be to get more hospital experience and possibly my foot in the door for a RN position at the hospital. I plan on doing more research but I just wanted to know if any other LPNs faced a problem with getting in as a student nurse or extern while having an active nursing license. If I do get hired it will be a major pay cut but I will keep working as a LPN PRN to supplement. Besides experience is priceless. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks ! :nurse:

I'm not sure where you live, but I wanted to do the same as well, but was told I would be unable to due to already having an LPN license. It's not a rule for the board of nursing where I live, but the facilities here feel as though it is a liability issue...

I live in Maryland so I will ask the BON. Yeah I thought it would be a liability issue since we are held to the standard of the highest license we have.

I too believe you will be held to the highest standard (eg LPN) in your working field. So if possible go for the LPN money.

Most likely not... If I did go PRN at my job that would give me three dollars extra an hr. which would be great while working as a student extern. I mainly wanted to get my foot in the door at a hospital.

I just applied to a hospital today so please wish me well !!!! They have a student nurse PCT program and I'm hoping to get the job ! The lady in HR said I may have an advantage due to being a LPN because I'm familiar with alot of the procedures. She said there should not be a problem with me applying. I also sent an email to HR clarifying that while I'm a LPN I'm also a RN student. I'm praying that I will get this job !!!
