Hi,
So after taking pre-req's and applying to suffolk and farmingdale, I've finally decided to do the LPN program at Suffolk Boces....I have good grades but I was told Farmingdale alone had 2500 applicants for 30 seats....Since I have all the pre-req's I'm hoping once I'm finished with my LPN, I can just apply to the LPN to RN programs...granted I might have to retake some of thpse pre-reqs since some school have a time limit...but I'm hoping this is the best way to achieve my dream.
Waht are your thoughts and have you taken the same route here in NY? It's very competitive to get into an associates program now...figured this was my best bet??

Most if not all of these schools are not telling the truth with these applicant numbers. the school i go to which is laguardia, we have a website where we can look and see how many people registered for any class, nursing candidacy included. i've checked a few semesters now and the total never seemed to pass 200. maybe there not seperating the # of applicants who choose nursing as there major when they apply to the college for admissions vs. who actually applied for candidacy each semester. or they just want to intimidate people.I've been to a farmingdale nursing info. session and the the two ladies that conducted it were very unpleasant and rushed the session. one of the things that they said that i didn't like was that you have to had taken math in highschool or at the college level and the statistics class that nassau community college requires is not going to work. its the way they said it as if there better than them.

I am not on Long Island, I am about an hour north of NYC in Dutchess County. I am going the same route (I start Boces on Monday). I ended up getting an AS in Libealr Arts because I was waiting for clinicals for sooo long at DCC. I then went to Westchester Community and well it was worse there. I needed to score near perfect on the TEAS and well that was just not happening. DCC had a lottery type...which is just not fair IMO. SOOOO long story short I am doing LPN and hope to bridge right to BSN at Mt St. Mary's in Newburgh (Orange County). I think there are only 2 schools that offer LPN to BSN in NY, I am lucky its 20 minutes from my house :)
So good luck...with whatever you choose. I went the LPN route because I am 32 and I just don't have another 5 years to wait. I know 2 girls that did Excelsior completely online for their RN right after Boces...so its all very possible without waiting forever :)
This is the plan I'm considering also. For the r.n program at my school you need a 3.8gpa and up since I transferred in a b in eng from a previous college the highest I can get on my pre req is a 3.7 so I'm applying to the lpn here at my school since you can get in with a 3.4 and up and I have a 3.6. I wanted to stay here in my school and hopefully go for lpn-rn. Funny thing is on my way home from school tonight I was thinking of just doing lpn there and work part time and do excelsior at my own pace hopefully finishing it in one year.
TryingNot2BeScared,
I will be 33 in 2 days, so I'm in the same boat, plus I had to withdraw from one of my classes but re-took it and got a good grade, but they didn't care, the Administrator at the college said to me "if this is something you want to do with all your heart, then go the LPN route, when your finished with that, then do an LPN-RN program" - there are less people applying to the LPN to RN program, but you still need the pre-reqs, which I have. At least I'll be working in the field getting experience while doing my RN, I know here in NY, it's hard for a RN right out of school to find a good job, they like for you to have experience.
Best of luck to you.
