Hello, everyone,
Okay I am 25 years old and I am looking to go back to school since I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Science. However, I have not found a job with this degree for the last year. At first, I started out as a pre-nursing student for a BSN program, took the classes, a few classes I redid, applied for nursing school was placed on a 2-3 yr waiting list, and got disencouraged and changed my major. Thus, got my degree in Health Science. Now, I am thinking about going back to school at our local technical school for LPN. I feel like I still have a lot of information that I learned in my pre-nursing classes that should be utilized. I also have all my old notes and textbooks.
However, there's a few things that got me scared
1. Fear-what if it does not work out, cant get into program, I fail
2. Housing-I need to move out of parents house not a good environment to be trying to go back to school in
3. Money-take out more loans for classes, housing, etc.
On the flip side I could go back and teach health but I will have to do a two year program (which I could teach while going to school to be certified as a teacher) verses the 1 year LPN program.
Side Note: I do not have a husband or kids.
Basically, if you were in my shoes what would you do?
I am not stating that living with the parents is the best option and I certainly didn't want to do it either but I did it because it made sense.
I am just trying to offer support and advice. It's not like someone has to take my advice, but I know how hard some things in life can be and I just hate for people to think that things are impossible.
While in school I had a child, worked full time and lost my father. So life for me hasn't been the easiest. All I can do is offer what I can offer and they can take my advice for what it costs "nothing" if that's what they choose.
Good luck to you sweetie in whatever you decide to do. I pray that everything works out for you!
Some of us wouldn't consider returning home to live with parents unless it was to avoid becoming homeless. Not all of us had wonderful parents. Not all of us have a parental home that is conducive to learning. Not all of us have parents who are supportive of higher education.I love my parents, but I am a private person. I wouldn't return home to live with them unless I reached the desperation point.
I wouldn't dream of moving home with my mom, but then again, I don't assume that everyone has parents as rotten as mine, and I think more often than not, people have decent familial relationships.
guess i'm the odd woman out...i moved home with a 9mo old when hubby deployed the first time and got my LVN, i'm moving home agian in two months with my now 3yr old and a 2 mo old baby to do my LVN to RN..lol..but i am VERY fortunate to have fantastic support from my family! I dont LIKE moving home but it works for me...sometimes i wish i would have just stayed home and went to school when i was 19 but i thought i was tough stuff and could do it on my own.
i do agree that some people's familys just plain stink and you cant learn nor study with them in teh same household...so here's my suggestion...do you have any friends/roomates you can live with to share the cost while you are going to school? can you find a part time job somewhere even working a walmart just to give you some income? have you checked into your local job and family services, i know sometimes they offer support and $$ for schooling in the event that your are unemployable in your field.
if you can get by without taking out any extra money for living expenses then try, but if in the long run being a nurse and doing it NOW is that important to you, then do what you ahve to do. my mom took out a 40,000 loan to help her pay living expenses while going to respiratory therapy school..she didnt have a choice, but now that she's graduated, one of the hospitals is paying half of it for her as a sign on bonus, and she's gotten it deffered since she is workign on her bach. now as well. just another thought!!!
Thanks everyone for the reply. The reason why I want to move from home is because of the very difficult things that are happening at home that I feel may be a hinderance to me trying to go back to school. For one, I am dealing with an drug addicted parent and some more issues. I just thought if I go back to school it would be better if I moved out. I know I need to work if possible to help with my expenses and maybe even take out loans again. (I just dont want to). My other dilemma is whether I should go back for
1. lpn or
2. 2 year rn program or
3. teach health or science next year (get into an program in which I could work as a teacher while I am getting certification).
Whatever I do I need to make my mind up fast though. Thanks for the replies.:loveya:
First to answer question 1. Yes, LPN is a good choice, it is the lowest level to start out as as nurse but it is an ecxellent choice. You can always work your way up to RN, BSN, and higher. Next is what do your grades look like? All nursing schools are competitive. the higher your GPA for the classes that are required, the better chance you have to get in. Next, I don't encourage loans for school. So many students get so caught up in accepting loans and before you know it, you are in over your head in paying them back. Try to look for grants or even some facilities that will pay tuition assistance for students. By not having any kids that is a plus. You can really make the nursing field work for you. You can do travel nursing once graduated and have fun. Again, check your grades that will be a huge determining issue.
