HLT (able exam)

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

Hello,

Has anyone taken the HLT 141 ABLE Exam given by NVCC? If so can you give me a heads up, what to study, and useful study guides out there?

I'm not really sure what to expect for the exam.. I am an LPN, and I feel like I know a great deal of medical terminology, but it would be nice to hear from someone who has taken the exam to give me a little information on what to expect.

Thank you!

This thread has been moved to our LPN-to-RN nursing student forum to elicit more responses. Good luck to you.

I would like to share the little bit of information that I was finally able to track down....

The NOVA website was not helpful at all in providing information, but I was finally able to get ahold of someone who was kindly able to answer a few of my questions.

You have 2 hours to take the test, it is 100 questions, and is multiple choice. Supposedly the pass rate is extremely high, and it is suppose to be very basic/general medical terminology. In fact, I was able to speak to a friend who took it 3 years ago, and from what she remembers, she studied on the way to the exam and passed with no problem.

Prior to taking the test, you need to contact the nurse division and they will prepare a pass for you. Let them know several days in advance. I was told the exam pass could be picked up in room 344 at the medical campus.

I plan to take it next week, so I will post an update as to how I do. Fingers crossed here,

-Ashley

Ashley,

Thank you for the information. I am preparing to apply to the LPN to RN program at NVCC. When I called NVCC about the exam they did not inform me about a pass but told me to just head straight to the testing center. Thankfully, I read your post before showing up to take the exam. I wanted to know how the exam went for you? For myself, I purchased the book for the class to review. So far, it looks pretty straight forward. Thanks again for your post as I would have shown up expecting to test without a pass. Good luck!!

Hi MEL7!

I actually called today and they said that in the last 2 weeks they have changed the requirements so that you do NOT need a pass :) Just walk into the testing center room 344 and they will get you all set up to begin.

I have not yet taken it, mostly b/c I know that if I fail then that is the only opportunity I will have which terrifies me to be completely honest. Thankfully you only need a C to pass, but still I feel like I don't have the correct study material.

Which book did you purchase? I am going to take it next week, but if you take it before me...pretty please let me know how it goes!

Also, I don't know how complex the material is going to be...I mean let's be real, on a scale of (1-10), medical terminology can be really complex! ...hoping it's super basic. Good luck to you too!

Thank you for following up. I will definitely let you know how it goes. As for the textbook, I went to the NVCC online bookstore and typed in HLT 141 and found the textbook for the class. Then ordered it from Amazon because it's cheaper. You can also rent the textbook to save money. In the book the first three chapters are basic and then the following chapters are all about the body systems. If you purchase the book you can access the online practice questions which also has a practice final exam.

Oh good I rented a similar book! Wish I had purchased it to be able to access the online questions, but thankfully there are a lot of good online sites. FYI, it looks like the LPN-RN program deadline changed to May 14th instead of the 21st which I just checked on. Thank goodness I checked b/c I had no idea!!! I have been following the 2015 and didn't realize the deadline changed. Oh gosh....

Again, please let me know how you do! I am sure you will do great ;D

Hi Mel7! Have you had a chance to take the test yet? I plan to go in hopefully Monday :)

I want to share my update! The test, as I was told was suppose to be super easy... It was actually extremely difficult. The pass rate is really high so I had high hopes that it would be a piece of cake..nope. But, I passed!! With a 77% but I'll take it! You only need a 70% to pass.

I recommend that you absolutely study the meaning of Roots, prefixes and suffixes. Thank goodness I took this test shortly after taking A&P 141, 142, and am currently taking microbiology\Bio 150!

The material was not at all what I was expecting...I am an LPN going on 8 years and the material was hardly anything that I use on a normal basis.

Id suggest watching YouTube videos and studying the B.U.R.P.S list and making your own tests to study off of using Quizlet.

I probably shouldn't share what's actually on the test, but just prepare as much as possible. I really only studied this morning for 6 hrs before heading out to take the test, so if you can give yourself more study time I'm sure there's a good chance of passing.

Good luck everyone, and I hope my experience will have helped some of you too.

Also, I wouldn't consider it to be basic medical terminology...it's more like advanced medical terminology!

Thank you so much for the update. I still haven't been able to get up there to test. I'm hoping to take it this evening. I'm so happy that you passed. Hopefully, I will see you during the LPN to RN orientation.

I Hope it goes well!!

TThank you. I was able to take the exam last night and did well. It definitely is not an easy test. My recommendation to anyone that wants to take the HLT 141 ABLE to puchase the textbook for the class and study it. I don't think I would have done as well without using the online practice questions that came with the textbook.
