lpn/rn in homecare

I recently graduated from lpn school in january 2004:) and have been working in long term.And I also have been doing homecare taking care of disabled people.Im not enjoying long term as much as I thought I would.I love the nursing part of it.But not the working environment.I was an aide in assisted living when I was in school and I really enjoyed it.I think I want to do that part time and do home care part time.My real question is: Whats the job & pay difference between an lpn & rn in home care? Im really interested in doing visits involving treatments,dressing changes & simple proceedures.The thought of working in a hostpital scares me:uhoh21: and I would probably get eaten alive.Speed is a weakness of mine,and I really like the home environment.Any info is greatly appreciated.

It depends what state your in. I'm in NV and here you can't do admissions as an LPN, bascially what you state you interested in. Dressing changes, diabetics, teaching, foleys etc. This is one area it is an advantage to be an LPN and not the RN. The RN's have to do the oasis paperwork which is from hell. The LPN does the visit, and menial paperwork compared with the RN's load of paperwork. Around here they are offering on the average between 29-32 a visit LPN, 40-42 visit RN and 65 an admit RN only. Check your state laws. For some waiver programs in Ohio/unskilled care and LPN can open with RN supervision/co sign. You can do intermittant visits/skilled in Ohio with supervision....You can do hourly waiver skilled in Ohio as well.

Thank you for the wonderful advice,I love this site because when Im feeling incompetent as a nurse or I get heckled by a nurse manager I can count on this forum to help me through .

For those that have the temperment for it, hh is wonderful. You are thrown to the wolves though. Remember that you are the only one in the home- there is nobody to go to for advice. It would be really good to have a little med-surg background so you feel a little more comfortable. An agency I worked for before did not hire lpns since they can't do anything with Oasis (Admission, recert, post hospital, etc.) Where I work now, there is an LPN in the field and she is wonderful. I come to her often for advice. Sometimes private insurance will not pay for an LPN on a home visit- just depends. You might want to consider doing some intake in the office first for home health. That way you can get a better feel for it.

Cheryl- you quoted a pretty good per visit rate. RN's don't get the LPN rate you quoted. Is COL high where you are?

Where I work now-RN's get $45 per visit, and between $55-60 for opens. Where I use to work we had many LVN's working in Intake or out in the field. Because of the additional paperwork and responsibilities of case managing,the RN would see 5 re-visits whereas the LVN would see 6-7.
