LPN program at BOCES

Published

Hello everyone. I am very new to this board. I am thinking about taking LPN at BOCES and was wondering how intense this program is. They told me it runs 11 or 12 mos, 4 to 10 every weekday.

I am a certified HHA and CNA and took some college courses including HA & P, Microbiology, advanced math, etc; but it was almost 15 yrs ago (goodness!!!) and now I am not sure if my brain is still in a studying mode. :)

I did ace all my courses but that was a LOT of studying and I did not have to work at that time.

If anyone is or was taking LPN at BOCES, could you share with me your opinion.

From what I have read so far, it seems that HA & P and pharmacology are the hardest. How about the lab for anatomy? Did you have to dissect an animal (we did a cat) and were the labs hard?

Thanks a bunch.

Hi,

I just got accepted into the BOCES program in Newark (Wayne County) and I live in Avon. I start March 3rd, so I'm not sure of how hard it is. But I was told in my interview that I will have to study at least 2-3 hours per day. She also said that you will be studying more than one subject at a time with mutilple quizes during the week. That is the first three months - all classwork. But after that you go to clinical three days per week and only go to class two days per week. Of course this is for the full time day program.

But I KNOW you can do it if you really want it. Good luck and if you want I'll let you know how it goes in March.

I start my program in March after the school has postponed it twice. I am going in Derby NY (by Buffalo) I have been out of school for 20 yrs and have been a HHA and pharm tech so i hope that my experience will help. I am very fortuneate (sp) to have 1 daughter out of the house in college and my other daughter is 14. I am not going to work through this program cuz the school didnt recommend it (thank god for my hubby) I have to drive 25 miles to school 3 days a week for 12 months. I just cant wait to get started. Good luck to all!!!!

I am currently attending an accelerated 10 month full time LPN program in upstate NY. The pace is grueling. Class is Sept thru June, 8:30 - 2:00, M-F. Clinicals 3 days/week, from 8-2. Spend at least 3 hours a night studying & doing homework, and the same on weekends. Class started out with 53, lost many along the way and now down to under 30. The first three months, everybody in the class was always sick because they were so stressed and so exhausted. I wouldn't recommend the full time program for anyone who has to work while in the program, especially if they have children. I hear that their pass rate on the NCLEX is pretty high. I'll see for myself this summer, God willing. Good luck to you!

my cousin went through the BOCES program near Syracuse. she is not a real studier , but did well with some effort. I think all programs are quite intense, it is definitely what you put into it! Goood Luck!!

This post is really old, but ithas been bumped so I figured I would chime in! :) I am attending an LPN program offered at the SUNY Brockport annex (REOC) in Rochester. It is M-F 8-2:30, clinicals two days a week. I love the program although it is difficult at times. It is definitely getting tougher as we near the end, but we are on the down slope so I am keeping my eyes on the prize! One of the earlier posts mentioned attending Deaconess. I don't know if that is an option for New Yorkers. I sent an inquiry late last year to Deaconess and got a reply stating Deaconess did not accept NY students because very few NY applicants were able to secure a clinical site. It may be something for others to look into personally, but I thought I might add that information. However, once you get your LPN Excelsior seems to be an excellent option if you are a good independent learner. Excelsior also has online classes now, and you can CLEP many of your classes. Excelsior is eligible for TAP assistance, but no Title IV funds. They have a decent payment plan, though! Good luck with your studies!
