Thinking about starting in a LPN program first then RN

I have a BS degree in a non health care field. However, I'm starting a part time LPN program in January. I know I have the option of taking a BS-BSn program or an RN program, but the LPN program really works for me since it is just 2-3 days a week. With three kids and a husband, I need the slowest route possible :chuckle

RN programs here in PA have long waiting lists. Although I think I'll get there someday, I'm in no rush.

I have received several people opinions on nursing school from other nurses and on the allnurses website. I think I will try for my LPN first then later for the RN. It seems the RN program is harder to get in Louisiana.
Experience working as an LPN and already having a BA degree in psychology will open many doors for the RN. Have a opinion? I would like to do mental health nursing.

I have a BS degree in a Human Services field and will be starting an LPN program this fall. I was able to use my BS degree on a Behavioral Health unit, which was great experience in the field of mental health. I haven't decided if this is the route I will pursue as an LPN, but having the background is almost a must. I would suggest you check out local hospitals and health care facilities and work as a c.n.a., case manager, or activity assistant, until you complete your LPN program.

I'm pursuing the LPN to start as I am paying cash and I don't want to be in school longer than I need to be. After LPN experience, I will pursue the RN & the hospital I work for can pay. :chuckle

I did the LPN program before I did my BN. It was very benefical for me! I had the opportunity to develop confidence in the healthcare field! And also time management skills.I was also credited some courses when i went to university. IN my opinion it will really tell you if this is the right thing for you and help you get there! Transition is a bit hard but its all worht it in the end!!
