Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

ok so ive been in nursing school for 4 weeks now and am having a hard time believing im actually in nursing school (lpn). i have waited forever and a year to get in and now that i'm here i am still having trouble accepting that i'm a nursing student. im not ruling out some deep distrubed pschylogical issue buried deep within myself but i find myself having hard time coping with studying and getting myself out of this rut and for lack of a better term getting my ass in gear !i could understand if i felt uncomfortable being in a classroom full of girls but thankfully all of them seem to love having us around for balance and generally respect us ! 8 guys out of 28 ! obviously this period of disbelief last longer for some than others so could you guys and girls drop me some pointers on what you did to make yourself believe ?

I have been in LPN school for 2 months now. At first, it was extremely hard to get used to the routine of going to school 5 days a week and studying for so many hours after school. You just have to get into the mindset that nursing is your dream!!! The quote that I think about often is "Failure is not an option". Just work on your study skills and try to have a schedule of when you study but make sure that you do have a little time to just relax and breathe!!!

You will get used to the routine. Just give it some time. Try your hardest and before you know it, you will be an LPN!!! :)

This is my biggest fear. I start LVN school in Aug. Im afraid I wont study enough. I was given some GREAT study ideas (more of organization) ideas, but I hope I put them to use. My husband brought home a desk calendar and Im going to put everday what needs to be read, studied, and homework. Then red and highlighter im going to mark down all the test days so that I can see them ahead of time.

Sounds like you have a couple issues concerning you right now, or maybe even 3 issues.

First. Studying, or not getting your @ss in gear to do it. No way to sugarcoat it. There is a ton of new material to learn, and if you've wanted to do this for a long time, you're going to need to channel your enthusiasm and hit the books. Figure out how you study best. In a group, alone, at night, when you get home or whenever you feel at your best. If you get behind with it, it can be very hard to catch up.

Second, the sense of "is this real?" Do you want it to be real? Or are you second guessing your decision? Nothing wrong with having doubts, everyone does-- but after only 4 weeks, I think you will need to wait a while to make the judgement. Do you know any recent grads from your school who could give you his or her experience?

Nursing school is designed to go from the general to the specific, and the normal to the not normal. This probably means that what you are doing right now isn't much different from other classes you've taken. As you move along it will become very nurse-like and very real.

Last, you are 1 of 8 other guys in the class! That is a positive! But I guess you know that already. ;) Best wishes to you.

thank you for your thoughts yes nursing school does have its benefits i'm not complaning about that ! the girls all have so much personality ! being in nursing school and forming a routine, studying everyday, absorbing the info and putting into daily use thinking that people could get worse if we dont get it right! heavy lies the crown ! anyways good luck to all my fellow lpn students and thank you for your support

I feel like I had no time to say what the hell is going on, it was so fast paced and I had no choice but to study and skip out on the things I wanted to do. I love nursing and cannot wait to graduate but being in school for 5 months already I want a little bit of my life back! Only 6 more months to go. It's hard, but completely worth it. and I plan to go on for my masters so I will be having to jump through a lot of hoops. You just have to keep saying to yourself, it's only "blah amount of months left". Maybe make a list of reasons why you want to become a nurse, list all of the positives of getting that job, it will help!! Add to the list whenever you get an idea, and look at it when you feel down!

Hi all, I take my last tommorrow, have a 3 day preceptorship and some general school housekeeping stuff left to finish and I graduate on the 29th. I can't believe it is here, but I am so glad it is over too! It is very bittersweet. Last year at this time I was so excited, so organized, and literally counted the days down until school started. I was gregarious, thrilled, and still am but I am tired. I am ready to come home and not have to study. The thought of that is still foreign to me. I too am ready for a slice of my life back. Nursing school is not so much hard as it is demanding and encompassing. You have to pay your dues. You need to study. It is only going to get more difficult. I don't want you to think I am being negative because I am not, but you need to get your game on. If you don't have it, you will lose, and I have seen people that I thought were so strong get dropped. It kills me. I hate to see anybody who busts their butts to get into school get asked to leave because of either grades or practicing outside of their scope of practice. I can only suggest that you get organized with every aspect of your life. Make the commitment, that you already have, and get through it. I wish you the best of luck. You can succeed. But you need a good kick in the pants to get there! Stay strong!
