LPN looking for alternatives

Published

I am going on my 15th year as an LPN and only 32, my problem is I am burning out quick. I love providing patient care and caring for people but here lately I have found little things annoy me and I am just tired.

Is there other medical related jobs out there for LPNs? Something that will remove me from the direct patient contact? I do not want to give up nursing all together but I am afraid if I do not step back now it will lead to that. Please help any advice is appreciated.:banghead:

In Ohio, LPN's and RNs can take a class called teach the teacher. After completing it, they can teach an STNA class. Also, have you tried home health-you aren't rushed and get to spend lots of time with the patient. Of course, these suggestions are made without knowing what exactly the little things that annoy you are and where you have spent most of your career. But yeah, you sound burned out. It may help to take a mental health day, pamper yourself, buy a chocolate candle lol.

I do pediatric homecare and it is a job I love and have done for all but 2 years of my nursing career. I love all the kids I care for but here lately I am dragging myself in. I guess nightshift don't help much either. I am never annoyed with my patients it is mainly the other nurses (the normal: Never restocking, leaving a pile of papers to be filed, Not completing drs orders). Talking to the office is a waste of breath as they just tell me everyone has their own quirks.

I just got back off a 2 week vacation and still thought about how I need a change in career somewhere along the line. We are so short staff that before I went on vacation I worked part of everyday for 32 days straight and then got grief for taking the vacation.

Here are some options for LPNs in my area:

1. Becoming an instructor for LPNs, CNAs, and MAs

2. Nurse management (ADON, staffing coordinator, etc.)

3. MDS nurse

4. Case management

Case management? work for an insurance company/ Audit charts for Quality Improvement in a hopsital, clinic, or insurance company?

Teach at a local LVN program?

All good suggestions if you can find the certifications or someone willing to train or give you a chance. Been nursing as an LPN for 24 years and am having the trouble I listed .I have wanted off the floor for at least 10 years and can't seem to get anywhere.

Also, you can become a nurse entrepreneur if you've got some common sense, business savvy, and money to start a venture. I know of an LPN/LVN who owns two small for-profit trade schools in California. These trade schools provide vocational and career training by offering programs in medical assisting, computer office clerk, medical billing and coding, and childcare assistant.
