Child does not want g-tube removed
I am not a mom but I am a pediatric nurse so I am going to give my worth. Do what they say to do with pacifiers and take her to build a bear and have it sewn inside (after its cleaned or if its a mic button use a new one) that way she will have a celebration toy and tube with her. It is a part of her and its fear of the unknown. You did the best you could at explaining it not really knowing at the time what the outcome would be. Good Luck

PALS certification
The link that I saw the other day said to contact the local american heart association. I too am looking into this course but just now started looking. I have even thought about contacting the local fire school since they also teach paramedics.

Soooo EXCITED.......and nervous too!!!!
With pediatrics always remember you are not only treating them but also the nervous parents and sometimes grandparents who are over your shoulder. And if you ever feel like you are unsure at least act like it at the time in front of parents and then go find someone to help you. Parents get very weird if someone taking care of their child panics or acts bubble headed. I am a peds home care nurse who works with medically fragile children and have heard more than once about that "1 time we were in the hospital". Congrats and I am sure you will do great.

Unsanitary Condtions in Home/Can I refuse to take case
As an LVN there is usually an RN case manager. You have to report those conditions to the agency because its not good for your patient who has a trach. You have the right to ask for a new assignment but keep in mind it may not be the hours you want or even the days. I have done home care now for 13 years of my almost 15 yrs of nursing and have found a few bad cases (those are the ones that have the good day shift hrs and not weekends). I try to stick to a few cases since that keeps me from being short hrs if my pt goes into the hospital or anything else happens. Speak up not only for you but also for your patient.

Agencies with Benefits
I work agency and I do get health benefits but I am paying $180 A WEEK!!! for it. In my case its the only insurance I can get due to a previous cancer diagnosis. They also offer AFLAC and Paid Time Off after you work an ungodly amt of hours. Would I change it? No. I like being able to take off whenever I want and work as much as I want with no commitment.

Just hired!
I loved working in the prison I just did not like our DON. I gained so much experience there including lab draws and to listen when an inmate turns their arm over and says here (and shows you a teeny weenie spot on the back of his arm) is the only spot you will get blood:D. Keep an open mind to learning and the options are endless. For the most part inmates are respectful since they are clean and sober. The ones to watch carefully are the new intakes that can be high on something when they come in. For dress code really avoid all solid color uniforms as the gangs all have "colors" and inmates wear solid colors for the most part. K9 are trained to go for those specific color and they are vicious with their bites (yeah I saw a few of them on the butt) So just stick to the dress code policy and if in doubt dont wear it. Other bits of advice: Officers like to be called officers not guards. They can be your best friend or your worst enemy but are there to keep safety. If an officer says you cannot do something dont do it. Inmates have all the time in the world to think and yes they can use anything to cause havoc. Gum to keep the cell doors from locking, toilet paper to clog toilets, latex gloves for a homemade gun the list goes on and on. Just never get comfortable and you will be fine. Good Luck and enjoy it as I did the short bit of time that I worked there

LPN relocating to TX any Texans help is appreciated
I have been an LPN for 14 1/2 yrs now here in DE and just found out we are moving to Texas. Abilene Texas area to be exact. I have been searching for the past week trying to find a possible job. My fiance is in the Air Force so its kind of a set thing as to the general location. My focus has been mainly on pediatric home care with medically fragile children with trach and vent. I would love to stay in this field but my searches are coming up empty. Can anyone point me in a possible agency that covers that area? Does anyone know of a respite home for children with special needs? I do have time since we are not moving until the end of Feb so I am not in panic mode yet. Thanks Sandy Really wishing I could pack up my current agency and move them with me:loveya:

LPN JOBs
I am not sure as to your experience but LTC is a good place to start. I have been an LPN for almost 15 years now and do pediatric home care for medically fragile children and love every minute. I cannot say there is lack of hours because I am busting my butt trying to fill the gaps. I work for Bayada and have found them to be a great agency when it comes to training. There is also Maxim and Christiana Care VNA. Good Luck "To the world I may be but 1 person, but to 1 person I may be the world"....UNKNOWN

LPN looking for alternatives
I do pediatric homecare and it is a job I love and have done for all but 2 years of my nursing career. I love all the kids I care for but here lately I am dragging myself in. I guess nightshift don't help much either. I am never annoyed with my patients it is mainly the other nurses (the normal: Never restocking, leaving a pile of papers to be filed, Not completing drs orders). Talking to the office is a waste of breath as they just tell me everyone has their own quirks. I just got back off a 2 week vacation and still thought about how I need a change in career somewhere along the line. We are so short staff that before I went on vacation I worked part of everyday for 32 days straight and then got grief for taking the vacation.

LPN looking for alternatives
I am going on my 15th year as an LPN and only 32, my problem is I am burning out quick. I love providing patient care and caring for people but here lately I have found little things annoy me and I am just tired. Is there other medical related jobs out there for LPNs? Something that will remove me from the direct patient contact? I do not want to give up nursing all together but I am afraid if I do not step back now it will lead to that. Please help any advice is appreciated.
